Rally Comes Up Short in Loss to Seattle U.

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State's rally attempt from 19 points down came up short Sunday afternoon in Taco Bell Arena as the Broncos fell in another high scoring game this time 89-80 to Seattle University. Kati Isham led the Broncos with 20 points followed by Lauren Lenhardt with her first double-double of the season on 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Broncos dug themselves a big hole in the first half and were forced to play catchup most of the day. They pulled to within two points on three occasions in the second half but could never get over the hump as Boise State dropped to 4-4 overall.
Turnovers and free throws where big problems for Boise State in the game as Seattle took advantage of its opportunities. The Redhawks had 28 more free throw attempts then the Broncos converting on 33-of-40 compared to just nine-of-12 for the home side. Boise State was called for 25 fouls during the contest while Seattle had 13.
Though the turnovers were close 23-to-19 against Boise State, Seattle managed to capitalized on the Broncos give aways for a big 34-to-19 advantage in points off turnovers. Free throws and points off turnovers combined for a 39-point difference in favor of the Redhawks which Boise State could not overcome in the end.
The first half ended with Seattle turning a 28-21 lead with 5:37 left into a 17-point halftime lead when the Redhawks out scored the Broncos 20-10 down the stretch. Isham had 14 of her team-high 20 points in the first half as she tried to keep Boise State in the contest. No one else had more than four points as the Broncos struggled with 15 turnovers in the opening 20 minutes of play.
The second period saw Boise State roll off a 10-0 run to start the half quickly pulling to within seven points, 48-41, two minutes in. The Redhawks managed to keep the Broncos at a distance maintaining an eight to 13 point lead until midway through the half.
Down 61-48 with 14:02 to play, Boise State began its second rally attempt as it clawed to within two points on a Lenhardt jumper with 10:09 to go and the score at 63-61. Seattle extended the lead back to four points on its next possession only to see Lenhardt hit a second jumper to pull back to within two points at 65-63 with 9:41 to left. The Broncos would never take the lead as the Redhawks held them at bay.
Boise State was down two, 73-71, with 4:11 remaining when they Broncos let it slip away. They missed their next three shot attempts followed by three consecutive turnovers as the Redhawks raced back out to a 12-point lead, 83-71, on a 10-0 run to put the game away with 1:20 to go. Seattle's last field goal came with 2:18 on the clock as it iced the game from the free throw line on 10-consecutive makes to claim the road victory.
Three Broncos hit double-figure scoring led by Isham's 20 to go with three rebounds, one assist and two steals. Lenhardt's double-double was next followed by Diana Lee with 13 points and three assists. Nicole Brady had nine points and three boards, while Kinzi Poteet added eight points and six rebounds.
Boise State shot well once again hitting 48.5 percent (32-66) from the floor, along with 31.8 percent (7-22) from the arc and 75 percent (9-12) from the foul line. Defensively, the Broncos allowed the Redhawks to hit 46 percent (23-50) from the floor and 45.5 percent (10-22) from the 3-point line. The Broncos dominated the boards 37-to-25 and 18-to-11 in offensive boards, good for a 19-to-10 advantage in second chance points.
Seattle had five players in double-digit points led by Kacie Sowell with 19 to go with a team-high five rebounds. Ashley Ward and Elle Kerfoot each added 17 points followed by Talisa Rhea with 13 and Daidra Brown with 10.
Boise State will close a five-game homestand this coming weekend when they host Montana Tech on Thursday night, Dec. 8, at 7:00 p.m., followed by New Mexico State on Sunday, Dec. 11, at 2:00 p.m., both games with be held in Taco Bell Arena.
