Boise State holds off Montana State for big 70-65 road win in women's basketball?

BOZEMAN, Montana (12/5/08) Boise State’s women’s basketball team claimed their first road victory of the year defeating Montana State 70-65 in Bozeman. The Broncos held the lead for the first 30 minutes of the game before the Bobcats rallied midway through the second period.  Down five with 6:42 to play, Boise State battled back for the victory outscoring Montana State 18-8 down the stretch.

 

Jamia Malone hit a 3-pointer on the first shot of the game to give the Broncos the early lead. Boise State then rolled out to a 13-point advantage at 17-4 six minutes into the contest before the Bobcats gathered themselves.

 

Montana State countered cutting the Boise State lead to three, 24-21, by the 8:27 mark. The Broncos then pulled out to a six-point halftime advantage at 37-31 after shooting 40 percent from the floor in the first 20 minutes compared to MSU’s 37 percent.  

 

The contest remained a six point or less game throughout the second period until the final horn sounded. The Broncos held the scoreboard advantage until the 13:05 mark when the Bobcats claimed their first lead of the game at 46-45 on a pair of Erica Perry free throws.

 

Montana State took their largest lead of the game with 6:42 to play at 57-52. Boise State then rallied outscoring the Bobcats 18-8 down the stretch. Melissa Rima hit a jumper from 17-feet out to give the Broncos the lead for good at 63-62 with 1:45 to play.

 

Boise State then held off Montana State in the final minute by converting on five-of-six free throws, three by Rima and two by freshman Courtney VanBrocklin with two seconds remaining to secure the victory.      

 

Janie Bos led the Broncos with her first career double-double on 14 points and 10 rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal. She was followed by Heather Pilcher with 13 points, Jamia Malone with 11 points, and Marisa Stotler with 11 points and seven boards.

 

Erica Perry led Montana State with a team-high 16 points to go with two boards, two assists, and three steals. Jenny Heringer was the only other Bobcat in double-digit scoring with 12 points.

 

Boise State finished the game with a poor statistical performance shooting 40 percent from the floor, 15 percent from the arc (2-13), and 56 percent (14-25) from the charity stripe. Montana State finished the game shooting 37 percent from the court, 17 percent (4-24) from 3-point range, and an impressive 85 percent (17-20) from the free-throw line.

 

The win gives Boise State a second consecutive victory and improves the Broncos to 4-4 on the year with an encounter with the Montana Lady Griz (4-2) on the horizon Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (Mountain). The loss dropped Montana State to 3-3 on the season.
