BOISE, Idaho - (12/6/2006) - Boise State won their second game in a row with a hard fought 70-65 victory over Denver Tuesday night at Taco Bell Arena in Boise. Michelle Hessing, Jess Thompson, and Rebecca Kepilino combined for 44 points to lead the Broncos over the Pioneers of the Sun Belt Conference. After falling behind by eight with 1:26 to go in the first half, Boise State rallied with a dominating performance on the boards out rebounding Denver 21-to-12 in the second half resulting in a 15-to-7 advantage in second chance points during the period.
Boise State also shot the ball relatively well from the floor for the first time in five games hitting 42.9 percent of their attempts on the night. The Broncos also had a big advantage from the free throw line outscoring the Pioneers 19-to-0 from the charity stripe.
The entire game was a battle as neither team led by more than nine points throughout the contest. After surrendering the lead (17-16) with 7:22 to go in the first period, it took the Broncos nearly 15 minutes to regain the lead, 46-45, on a pair of Jackie Lee free throws with 12:58 left in the game. After those free throws Denver would regain the lead once more at 48-46 on a Brooke Meyer three-pointer with 12:28 showing on the clock.
Boise State took control for good on a Jessica Thompson layup with ten and half minutes to play breaking a 48-48 tie. The Broncos then stretched their advantage to nine points at 61-52 with 5:26 remaining. The final five plus minutes saw the two teams battle for every loose ball with Denver pulling to within three points twice, the last time came with 19 seconds left.
Boise State’s last field goal came on a Jessica Thompson jumper with 5:26 to go in the game to make the score 61-52. Down by nine, the Pioneers were forced to foul late in the game to get back into the contest. The Broncos were able to keep Denver at arms length by hitting 9-of-15 free throws in the final three minutes.
Michelle Hessing and Jessica Thompson recorded games highs for points and rebounds with each recording 15 points and seven boards to lead the Broncos to the victory. Rebecca Kepilino knocked down 14 points of her own followed by seven points from Jackie Lee, and six by Tasha Harris.
Three Pioneers recorded double-figure points as well led by Tyesha Lowery’s 19. Nnenna Akotaobi was second with 12 points while Brooke Meyer chipped in 11. Alisha Godette led Denver on the boards with a team high eight followed by Sara Benham with six.
Boise State shot 42.9 percent from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from behind the arc, and 70.4 percent (19-of-27) from the foul line. Denver hit 50 percent (29-of-58) from the hardwood, 35 percent (7-of-20) from the three-point line, and 0 percent (0-of-2) from the charity stripe. Boise State out rebounded Denver 40-to-27 including 19 offensive boards to the Pioneers’ eight.
The victory improves Boise State to 5-3 on the year, 4-1 at home, while Denver falls to 3-3 overall. Next up for Boise State, they hit the road Thursday for northern California to face UC Davis (2-6) Friday night at 7:00 p.m. (pacific) and at San Francisco (3-5) at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
