BOISE, Idaho (12/3/07) - Boise State defeated Oral Roberts 73-64 in a game of runs Monday night at Taco Bell Arena. Jessica Thompson led four Broncos in double figure scoring with 17 points as the Broncos held off a pesky Golden Eagle squad. Four times Boise State took a double-digit lead only to watch Oral Roberts rally to cut it to five or less each time. Thompson score nine of the Broncos’ final 17 points as Boise State held on to claim their fourth win of the season and third straight at home.
Boise State had their best start of the season as they sprinted out to a 10-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and never trailed through 40 minutes of action. Junior guard Jessica Thompson came out on fire hitting her first three shots of the game to score eight quick points and pace the Broncos to their 10-0 run to open the game. Unfortunately, Thompson picked up her second foul four minutes into the half and was forced to sit the remainder of the first period.
Down 10, Oral Roberts began their first of four rallies of the night scoring eight unanswered points to pull within 12-10 with 13:32 remaining in the first half. Boise State then responded with a 18-7 run to regain their double-digit lead and stretch it to 13 points, 30-17, with 3:46 to go in the period. After trading baskets and mini runs, the Broncos eventually settled for a nine-point, 37-28, halftime advantage.
Oral Roberts jumped out quick to start the second period pulling to within five points, 37-32, on two field goals in the first minute of action. That completed the second Golden Eagle rally that cut Boise State’s 13-point lead at the 3:46 mark of the first half to five one minute into the second period.
Up five, Boise State slowly pulled away for the third time with a 19-8 run to give the Broncos a 16-point lead with 11:35 to play. That run was highlighted by three consecutive field goals made by junior Jenna Galassi as Boise State claimed their largest lead of the night.
Oral Roberts refused to fold as they battled back again with a run of 13-2 to cut the Broncos’ 16-point advantage to five, 58-53, with a little over seven minutes to go in the game.
Tasha Harris then hit a key three-pointer to give the Broncos an eight point lead, 61-53, with 7:10 remaining. Amanda Stewart and Jessica Thompson then hit four consecutive free throws between them as Boise State pulled back out to a 12 point lead, 65-53, with 6:13 showing on the clock.
The Golden Eagles then went to their go to player Jennifer Hardin who scored six unanswered points to draw Oral Roberts to within five once again with 4:10 to play. Boise State responded an 8-4 run, five by Jessica Thompson, to end the game and claim their nine point 73-64 victory over Oral Roberts.
During the game both teams shot the ball well. Boise State finished hitting 42.2 percent from the floor, they struggled from three-point range making 25 percent (6-24), but made an impressive 92.9 percent (13-14) of their free throws. Oral Roberts shot 41 percent from the court, 28.6 percent (6-21) from behind the arc, and a solid 80 percent (8-10) from the charity stripe. Boise State dominated the boards out rebounding ORU 42-28.
Jessica Thompson finished her seventh consecutive game in double figures with 17 points to go with three rebounds, one assist and one steal. Tasha Harris also completed her seventh straight double-digit point game with 12 points. Coach Presnell mentioned in his pre-game radio talk that he wanted his post players to step up. Senior center Amanda Stewart and sophomore Ja'Lara Walker each recorded 10-point (career high for Walker) and five-rebound nights. Freshman forward Melissa Rima chipped in with eight points and two rebounds, while junior Jenna Galassi recorded a season high six points and six boards. Senior forward Jackie Lee recorded her first double-rebound game of the year with a team high 12 to go with three points.
Jennifer Hardin led Oral Roberts with 25 points and six rebounds, followed by Mariana Camargo with 12 points. Janae Voelker tied Hardin for a team high six rebounds while adding six points.
The win moves the Broncos to 4-3 overall and 3-0 at home, Oral Roberts loses for the second time as they fall to 4-2 overall. Boise State continues their hardest schedule in years with three consecutive games against members of the Pacific-10 Conference. The action begins with the University of Washington at home in Taco Bell Arena at 7:00 p.m. this Friday night followed by trips to Washington State this Sunday (Dec. 9) and to Arizona next Wednesday (Dec. 12).
