LAS VEGAS, Nev. (11/29/2009) - Boise State rallied from eight down in the first half to defeat Washington State 68-64 in the championship game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas, Nev. Seniors Tasha Harris and Jessica Van Hoogen combined for 41 points, 26 in the second half, to lead the Broncos over the Cougars as Boise State improves to 7-0 for the first time since the 1974-75 team went 12-0 to open their year.

Tasha Harris recorded a combined 36 points over the weekend to earn the tournament MVP honor. The senior from Longmont, Colo., scored a team-high 23 points against the Cougars to hit a career milestone Sunday afternoon as she moved into third place on the Boise State career scoring list with 1,395 points.

The first half saw Washington State lead nearly the entire way by as many as eight points on a couple occasions.  The lone exception was a 11-10 Boise State lead when Heather Pilcher hit a mid-range jumper with 12:12 on the clock.

The Cougars responded with a 9-0 run in a little over a minute to take an eight-point lead, 19-11, with 11:02 to go before halftime. The lead then fluctuated between four and eight points until late in the half when the Broncos made a mini run to close the half down one when Harris made a driving layup at the buzzer to make the score 30-29 Cougars.

Boise State opened the second period fast. Freshman Julia Marshall found herself in early foul trouble in the first half resulting in her sitting on the bench for the major of the period. The second half saw her score seven of  the Broncos’ first 11 points as they reclaimed the lead with an 11-5 run to go up 40-36 with 16:16 to go.

Boise State held the lead until the 11 minute mark when WSU’s Jazmine Perkins converted a pair of free throws to take a 43-42 advantage. Van Hoogen answered the challenge for Boise State scoring the first five points of a 7-0 run to give the Broncos the lead for good as they sprinted out to a 49-43 advantage.

The Broncos stretched their lead to a game-high nine points, 54-45, when the Cougars began to slowly chip away at the margin. With 45 seconds remaining April Cook hit a 3-pointer over the outstretched hands of Harris to cut the Boise State lead to one point, 65-64.

Harris kept Washington State at bay hitting three-of-four free throws down the stretch. Up one with 25 seconds to go, Harris was fouled on an in bound play sending her to the line. She hit both charity shots to give the Broncos a three-point lead at 67-64.

With six seconds left the Cougars’ Carly Noyes missed a jumper from the center of the key, Rosie Tarnowski grabbed the board when she was fouled by Van Hoogen who was battling for the rebound. The Cougar went to the line with a chance to cut the Bronco lead with three seconds remaining. She missed the first, then intentionally bricked the second. However, Harris grabbed the rebound and was immediately fouled.

The senior stepped to the line to ice the game for the Broncos up three with two seconds left. She missed the first but hit the second to give Boise State the final four point victory margin. WSU’s Perkins missed a shot at the buzzer.
