PORTLAND, Oregon (11/30/07) - Tasha Harris’ career high 30 points was not enough to lift Boise State past Portland as the Pilots defeated the Broncos 84-80 Friday night at the Chiles Center in Portland. The game was a battle throughout the 40 minutes with eight ties and 15 lead changes. However, Portland managed to pull it out in the second half with a 11-0 run in which Boise State was unable to overcome. The Broncos who were playing without starting forward Rebecca Kepilino, the junior is out for the remainder of the season, wrapped up their four game road swing with a second consecutive loss.

The first half went back and forth from the tip. The Pilots started the first run of the game at the 11:12 mark of the period trailing by one point, 14-13. Portland rolled off a 12-2 run to claim a 25-16 advantage during the next four and half minutes.

Down nine points with 6:48 to play in the first half, Boise State responded with their own run out scoring the Pilots 15-5 to claim a one point, 31-30, lead with 2:19 showing on the clock. The Broncos then stretched their advantage to four points, 39-35, heading into halftime.

The second period remained close until Portland began the decisive run with just over 11 minutes to play. The score was tied at 55 apiece at the 11:16 mark. The Pilots then pulled out to an 11-point, 66-55, advantage with eight minutes to go.

Boise State attempted to rally pulling to within two points, 72-70, with just under three minutes to play. But Portland’s Kendra Morris responded by hitting a clutch three-pointer as the Pilots eventually stretched the lead back out to seven points, 77-70, a minute later. Portland’s Laiken Dollente kept Boise State at bay hitting eight-of-eight free throw attempts in the final three minutes, 13-of-14 in the game. The Broncos cut the Portland advantage to three twice more but could never manage to get over the top.

Though the Broncos lost the game, they played much better than in their previous two road losses. They ended up shooting 41.5 percent from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-15) from three-point range, and 67.7 percent (21-31) from the free throw line. The Pilots also shot the ball well hitting 42.9 percent from the court, 46.2 percent (6-13) from beyond the arc, and a impressive 82.8 percent (24-29) from the charity stripe, including 20-24 free throws in the second half. Boise State did out rebounded Portland 41 to 39 during the contest.

The Broncos were led by Harris and Jessica Thompson as they each recorded their sixth consecutive game in double points to open the season. Besides Harris’ 30 points she added two rebounds, three assists, and two steals in 35 minutes of action. Jessica Thompson contributed 14 points, five boards, four steals, and tied her career high for assists with six. Freshman Sierra Moeller hit double figures for the second time in three games as she netted 12 points to go with a team high eight rebounds. Senior forward Jackie Lee recorded nine points and five rebounds, followed by Amanda Stewart with eight points and five boards. Sophomore Ja'Lara Walker also played well scoring four points and grabbing six rebounds.

Portland was led by Laiken Dollente with 21 points and four rebounds. She was followed by Kendra Morris with 14 points and six rebounds, and Rachel Warren with 12 points and eight rebounds. Warren tied with Laura Thomas for the team high in rebounds.

The loss drops Boise State to 3-3 on the year, while Portland improves to 5-2 overall. Things do not get any easier for the Broncos as they face the hardest four=game stretch in years. They open a two game homestand with undefeated Oral Roberts at 7:00 p.m. Monday night at Taco Bell Arena, followed by three straight games against the Pacific-10 Conference opponents: Washington, at Washington State, and at Arizona.
