Boise State to play Washington State in Lady Rebel Round-Up championship game at 4:30 (MST) Sunday.
LAS VEGAS, Nev. (11/28/2009) - Boise State used a 17-2 run to break open a tight game as the Broncos defeated UNLV 74-66 in the opening game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up in Las Vegas. Boise State out scored UNLV 10-2 to close the first half and 7-0 to open the second to seize control of the game. Jessica Van Hoogen scored a season-high 26 points to lead Boise State who is off to its best start in 24 years at 6-0, the 1985-86 team opened 6-0.
Both teams opened the game cold from the floor as Boise State went 1-of-11 in the first five and a half minutes while UNLV went 2-of-8. The Lady Rebels took the early lead, 2-0, with a field goal by Erica Helms at the 16:58 mark. They extended their advantage to a UNLV game-high three points, 5-2, one and a half minutes later.
The Broncos responded taking the lead at 6-5 on a Van Hoogen 3-pointer from the high left wing with 13:30 to play in the period. UNLV regained their last lead of the night 15 seconds after that at 7-6 when Sandrine Nzeukou hit a layup.
The half then turned into a series of runs as the Broncos tried to pull away but could not quiet get it done. Down one (7-6), with 13:14 showing on the clock Boise State rolled off a 12-2 run to take a 18-9 lead with just under six minutes left in the opening half. However, the Lady Rebels rallied to cut their deficit to one with a 10-2 run that made the score 20-19 with 2:56 remaining. The half finished with the Broncos taking a 30-21 advantage into the break following a 10-2 Boise State run in the final three minutes.
Jessica Van Hoogen led the Broncos in the first period with 16 points including the first 11 Boise State points of the game. Boise State finished the half shooting 36.7 percent from the floor after starting the contest ice cold.
Boise State continued its run to open the second half when Tasha Harris scored the first seven points of the period to stretch the Bronco lead to a game-high 16 points at 37-21 with 16:55 to play.
The Broncos would maintain a double-digit lead between 12 and 16 points until there was just under five minutes remaining in the game when the Lady Rebels attempted to rally.
Boise State was up 61-49 with 4:45 showing on the clock when the rally began. UNLV pulled to within six points twice, the first was with 2:21 to go and the Broncos leading 63-57. Boise State stretched the lead back to 10 points, 67-57, when the Rebels closed to six at 68-62 with 51 seconds left.
The Broncos held the Rebels off in the final minute out scoring them six-to-four, Van Hoogen scored four points while Heather Pilcher hit the final basket for Boise State with 12 seconds left to give her team a 11-point advantage. UNLV’s Mia Bell hit a last second 3-pointer to close the margin to eight at the buzzer.
On the night Boise State shot 43.3 percent (26-60) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-18) from beyond the 3-point arc, and 69.2 percent (18-26) from the free-throw line. UNLV countered by converting 33.9 percent (19-56) from the floor, 33.3 percent (5-15) from the arc, and 65.7 percent (23-35) from the charity stripe. UNLV controlled the glass out rebounding Boise State 45 to 37 for a 16 to five advantage in second chance points. Once again turnovers were key for the Boise State win committing 15 while forcing 21 to out score the Rebels 20 to five in points off turnovers.
Van Hoogen led Boise State with 26 points, going 10-of-20 from the floor, to go with two rebounds, one assist and four steals. Harris followed with 13 points, five boards, and one assist. Janie Bos added 11 points, five rebounds, four assists and one steal, while Rebecca Kepilino chipped in with eight points, six rebounds, three assists, one block and one steal. Heather Pilcher recorded seven points, two rebounds, four assists, one block and three steals.
Erica Helms led UNLV with 18 points, three rebounds, three assists, and one block. Markiell Styles followed with a double-double on 10 points and a team-high 11 boards.
Boise State will play Washington State in Sunday's Lady Rebel Round-Up championship game at 4:30 p.m. (Mountain). The Cougars defeated Bradley 80-66 in Saturday's second contest. This will be a rematch with Washington State who defeated the Broncos in Boise last year by the score of 85-76. The Cougars are coached by former Boise State coach June Daugherty who is 7-1 against the Broncos.
