OREM, Utah (11/29/06) Utah Valley State handed Boise State a sound 15-point defeat Wednesday in Orem, Utah. Boise State struggled from the tip battling the flu bug and a good Wolverine team. The Broncos failed in matching the Wolverines energy and aggressiveness, and appeared to be a step behind the entire night as UVSC made the hustle plays to dominate the 50-50 balls.
Boise State started slow and never really got their feet under them during the game. Especially in the first half as Utah Valley State went out to a 22-9 lead nine minutes into the game. Boise State was plagued by turnovers in the opening period with 11 accounting for 13 UVSC points. The Broncos entered the game averaging 13.4 turnovers per game but nearly matched that total in the first half as they gave the ball away with uncharacteristic fluidity.
However, Boise State regrouped midway through the opening period closing the margin to one point with three minutes to go in the half. Nadia Begay sparked the rally by hitting two three-pointers followed by one from Jackie Lee as the Broncos battled to get back into the game at 33-32.
Unfortunately, Boise State appeared to let up in the final minutes of the first half once they pulled to within one. UVSC answered the Bronco run by staging one of their own. They finished the half with an 11-0 run to stretch the lead back to double-digits, 44-32, at the intermission.
The second half was a replay of the first half with the Broncos coming out lethargic as UVSC maintain a 4-10 point lead most of the half. Boise State did a better job holding onto the ball during the final period giving it away only four times. The lack of turnovers helped the Broncos pull within two points 62-60 with 6:18 to play. But like in the first half, the Wolverines seized control late with a run of their own. They outscored the Broncos 19-4 the rest of the way as Boise State began to struggle with foul trouble.
Jessica Thompson led Boise State in scoring with 20 points to go with six rebounds and two assists. Tasha Harris was second with 11 points followed by Rebecca Kepilino with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Leading UVSC was Robyn Fairbanks 29 points and 20 rebounds, while Sandy Marvin with 28 points and four rebounds.
The loss drops Boise State to 3-3 on the year with a pair of home games ahead of them. The Broncos host the undefeated (5-0) San Diego Toreros Sunday afternoon and Denver Tuesday night. Utah Valley State improved to 6-1 on the year.
