Harris leads Boise State with 18 points.

OREM, Utah (11/24/2009) - Boise State pulled away in the first half to claim a dominating 79-55 victory over Utah Valley on the road in Orem, Utah, Tuesday night. All 11 Broncos scored in the victory led by Tasha Harris who continues to light up the scoreboard with a team-high 18 points. Boise State took control midway through the first half using a 21-2 run to blow open a close game and never looked back as the Broncos won their fifth straight contest to open the season.

Boise State was on fired from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half as they hit seven of 13 by halftime, the Broncos entered the game struggling from distance hitting 23 percent. On they night they went nine-of-23 (.391) as seven different Broncos hit from the arc against the outmanned Wolverines with Harris and Julia Marshall recording two each.

Up five, 18-13, with 12:10 to play Boise State began its 21-2 run stretching its scoreboard advantage to a first half high of 24 points, 39-15, with 5:31 remaining in the period. Eventually the Broncos took a 20 point lead into the break up 46 to 26.

The second half began with the Wolverines making a mini run out scoring the Broncos 12 to six to pull within 14 points, 52-38, with 16:30 to go. That was the closest Utah Valley would get in the second half as Boise State responded with a 13-2 run to put away the Wolverines with just over 12 minutes remaining.

The Broncos largest lead of the game came with 2:39 left up 29 points at 77-48. Boise State was able to play its younger players for most of the final 10 minutes as the Broncos kept their lead above 20 points down the stretch. Van Hoogen came out with 13:27 remaining, Harris was subbed out with just under 11 minutes to play and Janie Bos came out at the 10:04 mark. 

Once again Boise State’s defense was big forcing 18 turnovers for a 25 to six advantage in points off turnovers, the Broncos gave it away 14 times. Points in the paint was also big as Boise State was able to drive into the post as a result of their outside success in the first half forcing Utah Valley to extend its defense. By games end the Broncos out scored the Wolverines 34 to 20 in the paint.

Harris led the Broncos with 18 points, three rebounds, a season-high seven assists and one steal. She was followed by freshman Julia Marshall with 10 points, two boards, one assist and three steals. Stacie Gross had a career night with nine points, she went six-of-six from the free-throw line, and three rebounds. Melissa Rima added eight points and eight rebounds, Jessica Van Hoogen scored eight points to go with three assists and two steals. Freshman Kinzi Poteet had a team-high nine rebounds to go with three points and two blocks.

Utah Valley was led by senior Julie Smith with 23 points and eight rebounds. Boise native Blake Reynolds (Centennial HS) recorded five points and six rebounds.

Next up for Boise State is the Lady Rebel Round-Up this weekend in Las Vegas where they will meet UNLV in the tournament opener on Saturday, then play either Washington State or Bradley on Sunday.
