WHAT’S HAPPENING
  • Game:  Boise State (2-1) is on the road at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska, where they will play Long Beach State (2-1) in the first round on Tuesday.  
  • Second Game: Depending on the outcome of Tuesday’s contest Boise State will face either Yale (0-0) or the host, Alaska Anchorage, on Wednesday.
  • Radio: KTIK (AM 1350) will carry the Broncos again this season. Chris Lewis returns for his second season as the voice of the Broncos.

TOURNAMENT TIDBITS
  • Return Trip to Tournament:  This is the second time that the Broncos have competed in this tournament. The last was in Feb. 23-25, 1990 when it was called the Northern Lights Invitational.
  • Last Time:  Boise State went 1-2 in 1990 against UAA (L 77-76), Southern Methodist (W 75-66) and Georgia Tech (L 93-66).
  • All-Tournament Team:  Current Boise State Athletics chief financial officer Niki Gamez was named to the all-tournament team in 1990 as a senior. 
  • Homecoming:  Current Boise State junior Keiahnna Engel is from Anchorage where she graduated from Dimond High School in 2011.
  • Familiar Ground:  Boise State head coach use to coach against UAA when he was at Seattle Pacific who is in the same conference with the Seawolves.
  • Former Rivals:  Boise State was once conference rivals with two of the three schools competing at the Great Alaska Shootout:

  • Alaska Airlines Center:  The tournament is being held in the brand new Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of UAA, it seats 5,000 fans.

  • All-Time Record:  This is the ninth in the series between these former Big West rivals (1996-2001) ... the series is tied 4-4.  
  • Last Time: The last time these two programs met was Feb. 18, 2001 in Long Beach, Calif., where he 49ers won the final Big West meeting between the two schools 87-66.

  • Boise State’s Record: The Broncos are currently 2-1 overall.
  • Recently for Boise State: After opening with a pair of home victories, the Broncos went on the road where they lost last Friday (Nov. 21) at Southern Utah 66-64 in Cedar City, Utah ... the T-Birds hit a shot with 6.4 seconds left to defeat the Broncos. 
  • Preseason MW Poll: Boise State is expected to battle for the Mountain West championship having been picked to place second in the preseason poll.
  • Long Beach State’s Conference Affiliation: The 49ers are members of the Big West Conference where they were picked to place fifth out of nine schools by the coaches.
  • Long Beach State’s Record: The 49ers enter the Great Alaska Shootout with a 2-1 record.  
  • Recently for the 49ers: Long Beach State opened with a pair of wins, including a 74-62 victory over Mountain West member San Diego State on the road (Nov. 16) ... the 49ers suffered their first loss of the year at home in overtime 90-85 to Southern Cal (Nov. 21).     
  • Boise State at Home: The Broncos are 2-0 at home in 2014-15. They went 11-4 in Taco Bell Arena last year and are now 274-144 (.656 pct.) all-time in Taco Bell Arena.

Boise State returns everyone from last year’s squad including all five starters ... leading the way is senior wing Deanna Weaver who led the team averaging 13.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game ... Miquelle Askew (Jr., center) followed at 13.0 ppg and 6.0 rpg ... Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego started at point averaging 9.5 ppg, 2.5 rpg and 3.3 assists per game.
  • Players to Watch for Boise State:  The Broncos return senior wing Deanna Weaver who earned MW All-Conference First Team, MW Newcomer of the Year and MW All-Defensive Team honors last year, as well as being named Preseason All-MW this fall ... Sophomore point guard Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego was last year’s MW Co-Freshman of the Year and a member of the MW All-Freshmen Team ... Purdue transfer senior Camille Redmon was named the MW Preseason Newcomer of the Year.
