MALIBU, Calif. (11/23/2010) - Boise State University's women's basketball team fell 82-65 at Pepperdine University Tuesday night in Malibu, Calif. Pepperdine’s pressure defense caused havoc for the Broncos all night as the Waves out scored Boise State 38 to 15 in points off turnovers. Julia Marshall led Boise State with 13 points followed by Janie Bos with 11 as the Broncos fall to 3-2 on the year.
The first half was fast paced and one of runs as the teams pushed the ball up the floor. Boise State started the contest by hitting the first basket then was out scored 11-1 to fall behind 11-3. They trailed the rest of the half. Boise State was hurt early by foul trouble for the second straight game as Lauren Lenhardt and Kati Isham were on the bench by the 14 minute mark of the half, four Broncos had two fouls each at the break.
Each time Boise State made a run to close the gap in the first period the Waves countered. The Broncos entered the game knowing the Waves were a high pressure team and averaged 17.5 steals per game. Boise State struggled with the pressure turning it over 15 times in the first half. However, the Waves also had trouble holding onto the ball giving it back 15 times themselves. Pepperdine capitalized on more of their opportunities off turnovers and held a 21 to 11 advantage in points off turnovers at the break.
Pepperdine also dominated the boards in the first 20 minutes as they grabbed more offensive rebounds than the Broncos had total boards. The Waves held a 23 to 11 margin on the glass including a 12 to six lead in offensive boards. But it was Boise State who took advantage of their offensive boards out scoring the Waves 10 to six in second chance points.
Julia Marhsall led the Broncos at half with eight points, no one else had more than four. Pepperdine was led by Katie Menton who had 12 points on four-of-eight shooting from the 3-point arc. Pepperdine took a period-high 14 point lead into the break at 37-23.
The second half did not start well for Boise State as Pepperdine came out fast, scoring on their first four possessions led by two Menton 3-pointers to stretch the lead to 22 points at 47-35 with 18:12 remaining.
The Waves continued to light it up as they stretched their lead to a game-high 30 points, 75-45 with 8:28 to go. While Boise State struggled with maintaining ball control do to the pressure, Pepperdine cut their turnovers down to three in the last half as they dominated the points off turnovers.
The Waves also won the hustle plays getting to lose balls and rebounds as the Broncos were a step slower. Boise State ended the night shooting well from the floor hitting 47.3 percent (26-55) but the turnovers kept them from catching the Waves. The Broncos really struggled from the 3-point arc converting a season-low 17 percent (3-18). They did hit free throws at a decent 77 percent (10-13) rate hen they got to the line. Statistically Boise State played well they shot well from mid-range in had more fast break points nine to four, as well as, more second chance points 14 to 10. However, turnovers and defensive rebounding killed them to night.
Pepperdine went 43 percent (29-68) from the floor, 37 percent (11-30) from the 3-point line and 72 percent (13-18) from the charity stripe. The Waves out rebounded the Broncos 39 to 33 overall. Turnovers favored Pepperdine as well, Boise State committed 26 compared to 18 for the host.
Julia Marshall led three Boise State players in double-figure scoring with 13 points and three rebounds, and one assist. Janie Bos followed with 11 points, while Janelle Kearney added 10 points.
Katie Menton led Pepperdine with 18 points on six of 11 shooting from the 3-point line. Jazmine Jackson was second with 12 points followed by Shay William-Cooeny with 10.
Next up for Boise State is the Coors Rocky Mountain Invitational at Fort Collins, Colo., this weekend when the Broncos play Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Saturday and Texas Southern on Sunday.
