SEATTLE, Wash. (11/23/08) The University of Washington handed Boise State University a 74-51 defeat Sunday afternoon in Seattle. After scoring the first four points of the game, the Broncos hit a wall and never recovered as the Huskies ran off a 15-0 run and cruised to the 23-point victory. Playing without their star point guard Tasha Harris for the first time, the Broncos struggled to get anything going most of the day including advancing the ball up the floor.

Washington pressed the Broncos from the tip making it hard for the guards to get the ball across the mid-court stripe as Boise State committed a four-year high 32 turnovers resulting in a 36-to-seven Washington advantage in points off turnovers. Not since Boise State had 38 turnovers at Louisiana Tech in a 95-57 loss on Jan. 29, 2004, have the Broncos had so many give aways in a game.

By halftime Boise State trailed 48-18 and had committed as many turnovers as they had points. The trend change slightly when the freshmen guard tandem of Courtney VanBrocklin and Heather Pilcher were inserted for most of the second half as the Broncos came from 38 down with 13:47 to play to within 23 at the buzzer.

As a team Boise State shot 32 percent (20-63) from the court, 17 percent (3-18) from the 3-point line, and 53 percent (8-15) from the free-throw line. Washington shot 35 percent (24-69) from the floor, 43 percent (6-14) from the arc, and 63 percent (20-32) from the foul line. Washington out rebounded the Broncos 46-to-44.

Freshman Heather Pilcher led the Broncos with a career-high 13 points to go with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Marisa Stotler was second in scoring with nine points and six rebounds, while Melissa Rima had seven points and five boards.

Washington was led by three players in double figures beginning with Laura McLellan’s 15 points and four rebounds. She was followed by Kristi Kingma with 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds, and Sami Whitcomb with 11 points.

The loss drops Boise State to 2-2 overall with a game at the University of Wyoming (2-2) in Laramie looming Tuesday night. Washington improved to 1-2 on the year.
