MORAGA, California (11/23/07) - Boise State’s women’s basketball team ran past Cal State Bakersfield 83-53 in the first round of the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic Friday night in Moraga, Calif. Jessica Thompson scored 19 points to pace the Broncos as four Boise State players recorded double-digit points in the victory. The Broncos now play tournament host Saint Mary’s in the championship game at 7:00 p.m. (Pacific) Saturday.

Boise State broke the game open five minutes into the first half with the start of a 12-2 run that gave the Broncos a 10 point, 22-12, lead. Boise State was never really challenge after that run that ended with 11:19 to play in the first period. Boise State stretched their lead to 19 points, 43-28, late in the half before settling for a 15 point halftime advantage.

The second half was all Broncos as they opened the period with a 15-5 run that gave them a 25 point, 58-33, lead over Cal State Bakersfield with 13:51 to play. Once the lead reach 20 points, the Roadrunners where never able to pull closer than 20 the rest of the way. Boise State’s largest lead, 35 points, of the game would come when Jamia Malone nailed a deep three-pointer with 5:02 remaining on the clock to make the score 77-42.

Boise State dominated the Roadrunners forcing 32 turnovers for a 40-5 advantage in points of turnovers. They also commanded the paint by a 34-8 margin. The Broncos received plenty of help from their reserves out scoring the Roadrunners 44-18 off the bench.

For the game, Boise State had their best shooting performance of the season hitting 45.2 percent from the floor, 40.9 percent from three-point range, and 72.7 percent from the charity stripe. Cal State Bakersfield was held to 35.7 percent shooting from the court and 22.2 percent from long range. However, CSUB did win the battle of the boards out rebounding a taller Broncos squad 42-to-39.

Four Broncos scored double-digit points led by Thompson’s 19, followed by Jamia Malone with 13. Freshman Sierra Moeller had a breakout game with a solid outing recording 11 points and five rebounds. Junior point guard Tasha Harris contributed 10 points as she joined Thompson with her fourth consecutive double-figure scoring game to open the season. Melissa Rima and Ja’Lara Walker each netted eight points apiece. Amanda Stewart and Rebecca Kepilino led Boise State on the boards with six rebounds each.

Cal State Bakersfield was led by Chris Kepenekian with 14 points and four rebounds, and three assists. Krista Arase added 10 points and eight assists, followed by nine points from Shawnee Carter.

The win improves the Broncos to 3-1 on the year, while Cal State Bakersfield falls to 2-3. Boise State now faces the Saint Mary’s Gaels (3-2) at 7:00 (Pacific) Saturday night in the championship game of the Hilton Concord Thanksgiving Classic.
