Boise State Holds Off Eastern Washington 64-60...
Marshall leads Broncos with 14 points.
BOISE, Idaho (11/20/2010) - Boise State University’s women’s basketball team held off a pesky Eastern Washington University squad 64-60 in a hard fought game in Taco Bell Arena Saturday night. Julia Marshall led Boise State with 14 points including three 3-pointers in the final 10 minutes as the Broncos won an ugly game over the Eagles.
Eastern Washington started the game fast running out to a 16-6 lead by the 10:24 mark as the Eagles hit 50 percent of their shots. Meanwhile the Broncos struggled recording five points, all by Diana Lee, in the first eight minutes of the game going two of 10 from the floor for 20 percent.
Down 10 at 16-6, Boise State stormed back with a 16-0 run to take a 22-16 lead with 4:58 remaining in the period. Boise State’s defense held the Eagles scoreless for a little over seven minutes during the run. The Broncos stretched their advantage to a half-high six points at 25-19 before EWU rallied to take a 27-26 lead with 1:14 left. A Nicole Brady free throw and Lee jumper with three seconds left gave Boise State a two-point 29-27 lead at the break.
It was a foul plagued first 20 minutes as each team was in foul trouble. Boise State was hurt early when both starting posts, Janie Bos and Lauren Lenhardt were forced to the bench with two fouls each by the 12:30 mark of the half. By the end of the period four Broncos had two personals while Eastern had Carrie Ojeda with three and three others with two apiece.
The Broncos finished the period hitting 36 percent (9-25) from the court, 43 percent (3-7) from the 3-point line and 67 percent (8-12) from the free-throw line. Eastern cooled off by the end of the period converting 26 percent (8-31) from the floor, 33 percent (4-12) from the arc and 78 percent (7-9) from the foul line.
The second half was a battle to the end. The Eagles opened with a 5-0 run to take a 32-29 lead a minute into the period. After Boise State rallied to regain the lead, Eastern Washington’s Chene Cooper converted a three-point play hitting a jumper in the paint followed by a free throw for a 35-34 EWU advantage. That was the last time the Eagles led in the contest as the Broncos responded.
Boise State battled back with an 8-0 run to take a 42-35 lead with 12:43 on the clock. The Bronco scoreboard advantage remained a single digit one for the final 12-plus minutes with one exception when Heather Pilcher hit a layup at 9:24 to give the home side a game-high 10-point lead at 51-41.
The Eagles closed late in the game to within two point, 62-60, to give them life with 2:56 left. However, both teams went cold from the floor with the Broncos scoring the last two points in the game on a pair of free throws by Pilcher for the final 64-60 victory margin.
Boise State gave Eastern Washington several opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final minutes as the Broncos could not hit a shot and turned the ball. Boise State had been decent from the free-throw line entering the contest hitting 73 percent but really struggled tonight going 19-of-35 (.543 pct). In the final 2:56 Boise State turned the ball over three times and went 0-2 from the floor and two-for-eight from the charity stripe. Fortunately, Eastern was struggling as well.
At the end, Boise State finished hitting 42 percent (19-45) from the court and 41 percent (7-17) from the 3-point arc. Julia Marshall led Boise State in scoring on the night with 14 points. She scored 11 in the final 10:12 of the game including hitting three key 3-pointers when the Eagles were making a run.
Kati Isham followed Marshall with 13 points, four rebounds, two assists and one steal. Diana Lee added nine points, one rebound and three assists. Kinzi Poteet had a solid performance both offensively and defensively for Boise State she recorded eight points and tied for the team-high in rebounds with nine. Janie Bos matched Poteet’s rebounds and added three points.
The Eagles shot 27 percent (20-75) from the floor, 28 percent (8-29) from long range and 67 percent (12-18) from the foul line. Tatjana Sparavalo led Eastern Washington with 21 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Kyla Evans with 11 points, and Brianne Ryan with 10 points and a team-high 11 boards.
No one fouled out of the game but several players were close. EWU had three with four fouls while Boise State had two with three.
The Broncos improved to 3-1 on the year with its first road game on the horizon Tuesday night at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Eastern Washington, the defending Big Sky Conference champions, fell to 1-3 on the year.
