BOISE, Idaho (11/20/08) Boise State entered the game knowing it was going to be a battle, well it was as Washington State snapped the Broncos’ 19-game home win streak with a 85-77 victory over the Broncos in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. Washington State
built a 18-point advantage midway through the second half, then had to fight off a fierce Boise State rally that cut it to five with 5:33 to play.
The game was rough from the tip as Boise State struggled with Washington State’s physical play early in the first half. Even as the Cougars dominated the physical battle what was more of a factor in the opening 20 minutes was Boise State’s decision making as they forced several bad passes late in the half which resulted in easy Washington State points. As a result the Cougars slowly pulled away taking an eight-point advantage, 39-31, into the break.
The teams came out swinging to open the second half as they went toe to toe. Unfortunately disaster hit Boise State 41 seconds into the half when Tasha Harris, the WAC’s preseason Player of the Year, went down with an injury and did not return.
Even with Harris out the Broncos continued to push the ball up the floor. However they struggled initially without their star as Washington State stretched the lead to 18-points twice, the last coming with 9:34 to go.
However, Boise State did not give up without a fight as they regrouped and came storming back. Boise State rolled off a 15-2 run that was started by Ja'Lara Walker and Jenna Galassi who combined for the first seven points, followed by Melissa Rima and Brittany Moore who finished it with the final eight, five by Rima.
Boise State eventually cut the lead to five points at 65-60 with 5:33 showing on the clock. A Jenna Galassi 3-pointer could have cut it to two points but the shot hit the rim followed by a WSU defensive board with 4:52 to play.
Washington State then held off the Broncos in the final four and a half minutes hitting 13-of-16 free throws down the stretch.
Ja'Lara Walker led Boise State with 16 points, five rebounds and two blocks. Marisa Stotler, a transfer from Washington State, was second in scoring with 14 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. Harris finished the game with nine points, two rebounds, and four assists.
Washington State had five players reach double-figure points led by freshman April Cook with 18 points, followed by Katie Appleton with 16, Jazmine Perkins with 15, Rosie Tarnowski had 13 and seven rebounds, and Heather Molzen with 11 points and a team-high nine boards.
The loss drops Boise State to 2-1 overall as they head into a two-game road trip. They will play the University of Washington Sunday afternoon in Seattle, then Wyoming Tuesday night in Laramie. Meanwhile, the victory was the first of the season for Washington State who is now 1-1.
