Santa Clara, Calif. (11/17/07) - Santa Clara won the battle of the Broncos Saturday night defeating Boise State 73-51 in Santa Clara, Calif. Santa Clara won the game from the perimeter out scoring Boise State 30-9 from three point range hitting 50 percent 10-of-20 from distance, including 7-of-10 in the second half. Boise State struggled with their shoots throughout the game hitting 29.7 percent (19-64) from the floor and 15 percent (3-20) from three-point range. Meanwhile, Santa Clara hit 44.4 percent from the floor during the contest.
Boise State started slow falling behind 7-1 in the first four minutes of the game. It took the Broncos nearly seven minutes to record their first field goal when Jessica Thompson hit a three-pointer. Eventually, Boise State rallied to take an eight point lead with 6:48 to go in the opening period.
Santa Clara rallied late in the half with a 12-0 run to reclaim a five-point lead with 1:27 showing on the clock. However, Boise State scored the final six points of the half powered by four Ja'Lara Walker points, which included a rebound and put back at the buzzer to give Boise State a one-point advantage at the intermission.
The second half was just one of those periods where everything went from bad to worse for the Blue and Orange Broncos. Santa Clara lit up the scoreboard by out scoring Boise State 42-19 in the final 20 minutes. SCU hit seven of 10 three-pointers, shot 48.3 percent (14-29) from the floor, and did not miss a free throw (7-7) in the half.
Meanwhile, Boise State hit 24.2 percent (8-33) from the floor and 8.3 percent (1-12) from beyond the arc. The one bright spot in shooting was when Boise State’s Tasha Harris hit both of the Broncos second half free throws.
Everything went the way of Santa Clara including the calls by the officials who whistled Boise State for two technical fouls in the second half which helped break a close game open and shift momentum to the hosts. The first technical sparked a 22-7 run by Santa Clara as they went from three points up, 41-38, with 14:40 to go, to 19 points up with 8:14 left in the game.
Tasha Harris led Boise State for the third consecutive game with 14 points to go with four rebounds and two assists, while Jessica Thompson added 13 points of her own. No one else on the Boise State team scored more than the five points recorded by freshman Sierra Moeller who finished third in scoring. Jackie Lee and Rebecca Kepilino led on the glass with seven rebounds apiece.
Jen Gottschalk led Santa Clara with 28 points, including 16 in the second half, and eight rebounds, while Elizabeth Doran followed with 18 points.
The loss drops Boise State to 2-1 on the year. The Broncos continue the streak of four straight road games when they play the Cal State Bakersfield Roadrunners next Friday at the St. Mary’s Tournament in Moraga, Calif.
