BOISE, Idaho - (11/17/2006) - The Boise State women’s basketball team defeated the Portland Pilots 72-62 in non-conference action Friday night at Taco Bell Arena in Boise. Powered by 31 combined points from Tasha Harris and Jess Thompson the Broncos ran out to a 20-point first half lead and never looked back as Boise State claimed it’s second win of the season. In all, four Broncos recorded double-figure points in the victory over the Pilots.

The first half started a little sluggish but the tempo picked up by the halfway point of the period. With the score at 15-11 in favor of the Broncos with 11 minutes to go, Boise State ran off a 19-5 run to claim control of the game. It was the second time in as many games that the Broncos have had a decisive first half run to pull away from their opponent by halftime. In their season opener they reeled off a 16-1 run to close the first period against UC Davis (Nov. 10).

Jess Thompson, Tasha Harris, and Nadia Begay scored 27 of the Broncos’ 34 first half points that saw Boise State claim a 20 point lead with two minutes left. Portland was able to score the final six points of the half to cut the lead to 14 by the break giving them some momentum heading to the locker room.

The second half went back and forth with each team answering mini runs to keep the score between 10 and 20 points for most of the period. The Pilots led by Rachel Warren’s double-double on 20 points and 11 rebounds managed to cut the lead to nine points a couple times during the half only to see the Broncos answer.

Portland’s final run pulled them to within seven points, the closest they had been since they trailed 19-13 with 9:56 left in the first half, with a little more than a minute left in the game at 69-62. Boise State responded by scoring the final three points of the game to stretch the score to the final 10-point margin, 72-62.

Turnovers played a key role in the game with the Pilots giving it away 25 times compared to 14 for the Broncos. That resulted in Boise State’s 26-to-18 advantage in points off turnovers. The two teams battled hard down low throughout the contest with Boise State edging Portland 40-to-38 in rebounds leading to a 11-to-four advantage in second chance points. In the paint Boise State out scored Portland 34-to-32 with Rachel Warren having 20 of those Portland points.

Boise State shot 31.3 percent (22-of-63) from the floor, struggled from beyond the arc for the second time hitting 23.1 percent (3-of-13), and made 75.8 percent (25-of-33) of their free throws. Portland countered by hitting 39.7 percent (23-of-58) from the hardwood, 33.3 percent (4-of-12) from long range, and 85.7 percent (12-of-14) from the charity stripe.

On the day, Tasha Harris led Boise State in scoring with 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Jessica Thompson was second in points with 15, followed by Michelle Hessing’s 11 points, and Nadia Begay’s 10. It was a team effort on the boards with six Broncos recording between four and six boards apiece. Jackie Thompson, Hessing, and Jess Thompson each had six, followed by five from Rebecca Kepilino, an four from both Harris and Jenna Galassi. Kepilino recorded a career high three blocks in the game followed by two from Hessing.

Rachel Warren led the Portland effort with the 20 points, 11 rebounds, and two blocks, followed by Laiken Dollente s 16 points.

The win improves Boise State to 2-0 overall, while the loss is the first of the season for Portland who is now 2-1. The Broncos are back in action Monday night at Taco Bell Arena against the defending West Coast Conference champion Santa Clara Broncos to wrap-up a three game homestand to start the season.
