BOISE, Idaho (11/16/08) Marisa Stotler and Tasha Harris combined for 40 points to lead Boise State past the University of Portland 68-59 Sunday afternoon in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. Stotler scored a team-high 21 points while Harris added 19 as the duo helped keep the Broncos perfect on the young season at 2-0, extending Boise State’s record home win streak to 19.
The game was tight from the tip with neither team able to extend a lead beyond single-digits until late. For the second consecutive game the Broncos struggled early before turning it around when it counted. Boise State looked better initially against Portland than it did in the opener against Seattle.
The Pilots took an early two-point lead and held onto it for the first five minutes of the game before the Broncos gathered their feet beneath them. Down 5-3 four and a half minutes into the game, Marisa Stotler hit two of her seven free throws in the game to draw Boise State even at 5-5. The Broncos never trailed again in the contest.
Boise State took a four-point advantage, 29-25, into the halftime break after shooting 33 percent (10-30) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes compared to Portland’s 27 percent (8-30).
The Pilots opened the second half with several chances to take the lead from the Broncos but came up short after knotting the score at 29 apiece two minutes into the half. The two teams then traded baskets as Boise State’s lead fluctuated between nine and five points for most of the final period.
Harris gave the Broncos a boost when she made three of four Boise State field goals midway through the period extending the home team’s lead to nine points, 48-39, with just under 10 minutes to play.
The advantage was slowly stretched to a game-high 13 with three and half minutes left and the score reading 59-46.
Down 13, Portland began a quick rally to close the gap to four points with an 8-0 run to cut the score to 61-57 with 1:27 remaining. Harris and Brittany Moore then combined for seven points in the final minute to keep the Pilots at bay. Sandwiched around a Harris field goal and free throw, Moore hit four consecutive free throws to give Boise State an eight-point lead with 12 seconds remaining.
On the day, Washington State transfer Marisa Stotler recorded the team’s first double-double with team-highs for points and rebounds with 21 and 12 respectively. Harris followed with 19 points, six rebounds, one assist, and two steals. Freshman Heather Pilcher was the third Bronco in double-figure scoring with 10 points. Portland went 35 percent (21-60) from the court, 29 percent (5-17) from the arc, and 60 percent (12-20) from the foul line. The Broncos seized control of the boards in the second half finishing the game with a nine board spread, 46-37, and a 21-to-10 advantage in second chance points. The Boise State reserves also accounted for a 39-to-13 point difference in bench points.
