Lenhardt scores career-high 24 points.

BOISE, Idaho (11/12/2010) - Lauren Lenhardt scored a career-high 24 points but it was not enough as Boise State University fell at home in the season opener to the University of Portland 83-76 at Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos battled hard but trailed the entire game and could not quite get over the hump against the Pilots as turnovers and defensive rebounding cost Boise State in this game. Portland’s 25-to-eight advantage in second-chance points and 24 Bronco turnovers were to much for Boise State to overcome as they fall to 0-1.

Boise State started the game slow as they struggled holding onto the ball and getting their shots to fall. In the first half the Broncos were hitting 32 percent from the floor through the first 12 minutes before settling down to finish the first 20 minutes shooting 45 percent from the court, 40 percent from the arc and 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Lauren Lenhardt led the Broncos with 12 first-half points as Boise State erased a 12-point deficit, 25-13, with 8:29 remaining to one point with a 15-4 run to make it 29-28 Portland at the 4:00 mark.

The Pilots responded by out scoring the Broncos 11-6 to close the half and take a six-point lead into the break at 40-34. Portland shot 40 percent in the first half, 33 percent from the 3-point line and a perfect 100 percent (14-14) from the charity stripe.

The Pilots opened the second period with a 7-1 run to match their game-high 12-point lead at 47-35 with less than three minutes gone in the half.

Boise State began to battled back pulling to within three on a 11-2 run that ended on a pair of Julia Marshall free throws at the 14:55 mark and the score at 49-46 Portland.

The Pilots maintained a seven-point or less advantage for the next 10 minutes as the teams traded baskets and mini runs. Late in the game Portland took an 11-point, 75-64, lead with 4:10 to go on a Natalie Day layup. Neither team scored for the next two and half minutes except on a Boise State free throw by Stacie Gross with 2:25 to play and the Broncos down 10 points.

With time running out and down 10 at the 1:36 mark, things looked grim for the Broncos when Janie Bos hit two free throws to spark a Boise State run. The Broncos bumped up their pressure and gave themselves a chance with less than a minute to play when they scored seven-consecutive points to close to within three at 75-72 with 46 seconds remaining.

Down three, Boise State tried to get steals before resulting to fouling on the Pilots’ possessions as they attempted to gain control of the ball. However, Portland held off Boise State in the last 45 seconds converting eight-of-eight free throws as the Pilots out scored the Broncos eight-to-two from the charity stripe to win 83-76.

Turnovers and second chance points doomed Boise State in this game. The Broncos gave the ball away at crucial times stopping any momentum they had going. On the night the turnover margin was 24-to-15 in favor of Portland. Rebounding  was even at the end at 38 each, but Portland grabbed 20 offensive boards and converted them into a 25-to-eight advantage in second chance points, 15-to-four in the second period.

Three Broncos scored in double-figures led by a career-night from Lauren Lenhardt who scored 24 points on eight-of-12 shooting from the floor. She added four rebounds, one assist and two steals in 29 minutes of action. Janie Bos and Kati Isham added 11 points each. Bos recorded a team-high nine boards, while Isham added two rebounds, a team-high five assists and two steals.

All 10 Broncos who played scored for Boise State as Julia Marshall contributed seven points, one rebound and two assists. Freshman Diana Lee added six points, two boards and two assists in her debut game.

Tara Cronin led five Pilots in double-figure scoring with 19 points, followed by Natalie day with 17 points and seven boards. Nakeisha Day added 15 points, Alexis Gannis recorded 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds, while ReZina Teclemarian added 12 points and seven rebounds.

Boise State shot 45 percent (27-60) from the floor, 40 percent (6-15) from 3-point range and 80 percent (16-20) from the free-throw line. Portland countered with 41 percent (26-64) shooting from the court, 37 percent (6-16) from the arc and 81 percent (25-31) from the foul line.

Boise State continues the opening weekend when they host instate-rival Idaho State at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday in Taco Bell Arena.
