BOISE, Idaho (11/11/07) The Boise State Broncos swept through the opening weekend defeating Montana 70-64 Sunday afternoon in Boise. The trio of Tasha Harris, Jessica Thompson, and Rebecca Kepilino led the Broncos past the Lady Griz combining for 53 of the 70 points. The defending Western Athletic Conference champions are now 2-0 on the year.
The game was close throughout as the teams traded leads early. Montana took their first lead of the game on a Tamara Guardipee jumper to make the score 9-7 with seven minutes gone in the first half. The Broncos responded with five straight points from Tasha Harris less than a minute later giving Boise State a three-point edge at 12-9.
The Lady Griz’s last lead came with 9:41 to go in the opening period when Guardipee scored from inside the paint to give Montana a 17-16 lead. Jessica Thompson gave Boise State the lead for good by sparking a 15-5 Boise State run with two consecutive three-pointers. By the time the run ended the Broncos led 31-22 with 3:05 remaining before halftime. Eventually, Boise State took a seven-point, 33-26, advantage into the break.
The second half was tight like the first period. Boise State opened with Rebecca Kepilino scoring five quick points giving the Broncos their largest lead of the day at nine, 38-29, three minutes into the final stanza. The two then traded mini runs to the final buzzer with the Lady Griz pulling to within one point, 54-53 with 5:45 left in the game. However, they never managed to regain the lead in the game as the Broncos pulled away each time Montana closed.
Tasha Harris led three Broncos in double figure scoring with a career high 25 points to go with three rebounds and assists. Jessica Thompson added her third career double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, with a career high five three-point field goals. Meanwhile, Rebecca Kepilino recorded her sixth double-double on 11 points and 10 boards. Jamia Malone chipped into the team effort with nine points and five rebounds.
Montana was led by then top gun Mandy Morales with 28 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. No one else hit double digit points as Dana Conway had nine points, followed by Johanna Closson and Tamara Guardipee with eight points each. Guardipee had a team high eight rebounds.
Boise State shot 38.1 percent (24-63) from the floor, 36 percent (9-25) from beyond the arc, but struggled from the line hitting 61.9 percent (13-21). Defensively, the Broncos held Montana to 33.3 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent from three-point range. The Lady Griz hit 76.5 percent (13-17) from the charity stripe. On the glass, Montana had a slight edge 47 to 46 over Boise State.
The win keeps the Broncos undefeated after the opening weekend of the season at 2-0. They will travel for one game this week when they play at Santa Clara on Saturday night. Montana drops to 0-1 on the season with the loss.
