Women's Hoops Wins Season Opener In Impressive Fashion 73-56 Over UC Davis?

BOISE, Idaho (11/10/06) The Boise State women’s basketball team opened their season with an impressive performance defeating UC Davis 73-56 Friday night in Boise. Jackie Lee scored 16 points to lead four Broncos in double-figure scoring against the Aggies in an overall team effort. The win marks the second consecutive season that the Broncos have won their season opener.

 

After a slow start Boise State opened the game up in the final eight minutes of the first half with a 16-1 run to close the period. The Broncos never looked back after the run that saw them stretch a 22-19 lead to 38-20 by halftime, powered by eight points from both Jackie Lee and Rebecca Kepilino.

 

The second half began with Boise State stretching their lead to 22 points, 44-22, two minutes into the period. UC Davis attempted several rallies during the period but saw the Broncos deny any serious challenges to get the game closer than 14 points early in the half. Each Aggie run was answered by the Broncos with one of their own. The Broncos eventually opened up their largest lead of the game, a 24-point margin, with less than two minutes left in the contest.

 

For Boise State the season opener showed a lot of promise for the season with solid performances from numerous players. Jackie Lee led the team in scoring with 16 points adding three rebounds, and two assists in 24 minutes of action. Michelle Hessing was in foul trouble in the first half but ended the game with 11 points, three rebounds, and two blocks in 20 minutes (15 minutes in the second half).

 

Joining Lee and Hessing in double-digit scoring was the sophomore duo of Jess Thompson and Rebecca Kepilino with 10 each. Senior Nadia Begay added eight points followed by six points each from Jackie Thompson, Tasha Harris, and Amanda Stewart.

 

On the boards Jackie Thompson grabbed a team high 10 rebounds and caused much more trouble for the Aggies down low than the stats show. Kepilino was second on the boards with five followed by Begay and Jess Thompson with four apiece.

 

Leading the UC Davis Aggies was Heather Bates with 13 points and five rebounds. Right behind Bates was a foursome with nine points each in Haylee Donaghe, Kirsten Commins, Anna Harp, and Genevieve Costello. Ashley Curry led the Aggies on the glass with seven boards followed by Commins with six.

 

Boise State shot 43 percent from the floor, 22.7 percent (5-of-22) from beyond the arc, and a solid 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line. UC Davis shot 46 percent from the hardwood, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from long range, and 45.5 percent from the charity stripe.

 

The game marked the return of Boise State’s Tasha Harris who redshirted last season after starting at the point her freshman year in 2004-05. She started out top scoring six points, corralling three rebounds, and dishing out a team high five assists while committing only one turnover in 20 minutes. The season opener also saw the debut of freshman Bridgette Reyes in a reserve role at point guard. The Irvine, California native grabbed one rebound and recorded three assists in 13 minutes of action.

 

Boise State moves to 1-0 on the year with the win, while UC Davis goes to 0-1. The two teams will meet again in four weeks when the Broncos travel to UC Davis on December 8. In the meantime, Boise State continues their three-game home stand to open the season next weekend when they host a pair of teams from the West Coast Conference. The action begins with the Portland Pilots on Friday (Nov. 17) followed by the Santa Clara Broncos on Monday, November 20.
