Harris leads Broncos to 71-67 season opening victory over Loyola Marymount?

BOISE, Idaho (11/9/2007) The Boise State women’s basketball team opened the season with a hard fought 71-67 victory over Loyola Marymount Friday night in Boise. Junior point guard Tasha Harris led four Broncos in double figure scoring with 17 points. Boise State struggled early on but rallied from 10 points down midway through the first half to take an 11 point lead twice in the second period. The win was Boise State’s third consecutive season opening when since Gordy Presnell took over the program in 2005.


The Broncos had trouble getting their shots to fall early in the game as they opened the contest hitting four of their first 16 shots (.250). LMU went on a 10-2 run to take a 10-point, 20-10, lead with 10:55 left in the first half. However, Boise State weathered the storm and rallied with a 23-7 run to claim a six point lead with 3:28 to go. Eventually the Broncos took a one point 37-36 advantage into the intermission.


Loyola Marymount started the second half by taking their last lead of the game with a on a Melanie Ysaguirre layup one minute into the period for a 38-37 Lions lead. The Broncos responded by picking up their pace as they ran out to a seven point, 49-42, lead in the next four minutes. Solid outside shooting gave the Broncos a lift as three of their first four shots came from behind the arc. Jackie Lee hit the first three-pointer 1:10 into the half followed by Rebecca Kepilino and Jamia Malone.


Boise State eventually stretched the lead to 11 points twice, the first came with 9:23 to go on a layup by Lee to make the score 61-50. After the advantage was cut to nine, Tasha Harris pulled it back out to 11 on a pair of free throws at the 7:18 mark. Loyola Marymount then slowly chipped away at the lead cutting it to four points by the final buzzer.      


Harris led the Broncos with 17 points and four rebounds, while Jessica Thompson hit 12 points and grabbed six boards. Jamia Malone had 12 points followed by Rebecca Kepilino with 11 points and a team high seven rebounds. Joining Jamia Malone on the floor for the first time in a Bronco uniform were freshmen Melissa Rima with five points and three boards, and Sierra Moeller who had one rebound.


Three Lions recorded double digit points led by Valerie Ogoke with a double-double on 12points and 10 rebounds. Cassady Moore chipped in 12 points of her own followed by Renahy Young with 11. Aleyse Evans added six points and 10 rebounds.


Boise State ended the game shooting 37.1 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from beyond the arc, and struggled from the foul line hitting 55.6 percent. Loyola Marymount countered with 46.6 percent shooting from the court, 33.3 percent from three-point range, and 69.2 percent from the charity stripe.


The win gives Boise State a 1-0 record with a game on Sunday afternoon against Montana in Boise. Tip-off at Taco Bell Arena is at 2:05 p.m. Loyola Marymount falls to 0-1 with a game at UNLV on Sunday.
