Women's Basketball Picked Eighth in 2014 MW Race

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Boise State women's basketball has been picked to place eighth out of  11 teams  during the 2013-14 Mountain West Conference race. The Mountain West released its 2013-14 preseason poll today to tip off the league's women's basketball media days in Colorado Springs. The voting panel consisted of the MW's 11 head coaches and select women's basketball media from around the conference.

Fresno State, the 2013 MW tournament champion, was tabbed as the preseason favorite. The Bulldogs received 17 first-place votes and 238 total points. Wyoming was picked second with four first-place votes and 212 points, ahead of 2013 regular-season champion San Diego State. The Aztecs garnered two first-place votes and 196 points. New Mexico placed fourth with 185 points, while UNLV earned two first-place votes and 170 points for fifth place. Conference newcomer Utah State (136 points) edged out Colorado State (130 points) for sixth place. Boise State was picked eighth (96 points), followed by MW newcomer San José State (76 points) in ninth, Nevada in 10th (62 points) and Air Force in 11th (28 points).

Boise State returns seven members of last year's squad and added seven newcomers for the upcoming campaign. Brandi Henton the 2013 Mountain West Newcomer of the Year is the top returner back for the Broncos this season along with Diana Lee, Keiahnna Engel, Miquelle Askew, Lexie Der and Kayla Reinhart. Unfortunately, Kinzi Poteet will miss the year after suffering a season ending injury during workouts earlier this month.

The seven newcomers include University of Oregon transfer Deanna Weaver (Forward, Santa Clara, Calif.) who arrived at Boise State last January. She is joined by junior college transfer Hailey Laird (Guard, Parma, Idaho) from Southwestern Oregon Community College and five true freshmen: Tonishia Childress (Guard, Las Vegas, Nev.), Kenna McDavis (Forward/Guard, Phoenix, Ariz.), Brittney Pahukoa (Guard, Lake Stevens, Wash.), Brooke Pahukoa (Guard, Lake Stevens, Wash.) and Yaiza Rodriguez (Guard, Esplugues de Llobregat, Spain).

The Broncos will begin their third season in the Mountain West on Nov. 4 when they host their lone exhibition game of the fall against Southern Oregon at Taco Bell Arena.
