PUERTO VARAS, Chile (7/23/2011) - The Canadian U19 women's basketball team defeated Italy 75-51 Saturday at the FIBA World Championship in Puerto Varas, Chile. The victory gives Boise State University sophomore-to-be Diana Lee and Canada the Group A championship with a perfect 3-0 record.
Lee had an off day in scoring after hitting double-figure points in the first two games, she recorded two points against Italy to go with two rebounds and two steals in 14 minutes of action. The Vancouver, B.C., native entered the contest as one of the hottest players from beyond the 3-point arc hitting seven-of-10 from long distance, Saturday she struggled going 0-for-five.
Four teams finished the preliminary round undefeated, joining Canada are the United States, Australia and Brazil. Canada continues to lead the tournament in scoring averaging 83.3 points per game.
Lee and her teammates now advance to the next round of 12 teams. Canada (3-0), Italy (2-1) and China (1-2) all move on to the next round from Group A. They will be placed into Group E along with the top three teams from Group B which are the United States (3-0), Japan (2-1) and Russia (1-2). Each team keeps their record from the preliminary round and will now play the three new teams from the other group. Canada opens the next stage on Monday against Russia in Puerto Montt, Chile. They will then play Japan on Tuesday followed by the United States on Wednesday.
The top four teams from Group E will then advance to the quarterfinals, the knockout stage, against the top four teams out of Group F which includes: Australia (3-0), Brazil (3-0), France (2-1), Spain (2-1), Chile (1-2) and Chinese Taipei (1-2).
