Rodriguez Ortego and Spain Win European Championship

TEGUISE, Lanzarote, Spain - Boise State junior-to-be Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego helped the Spanish U20 National Team to the 2015 European women's basketball championship this past weekend. Spain went undefeated at 9-0 to claim its four U20 title in the last five years. Rodriguez Ortego played in eight of the nine contests for Spain including 13 minutes in the 66-47 championship victory over France on Sunday in Teguise, Spain. This tournament marked the sixth-consecutive year that Rodriguez Ortego has represented her nation in international competition.

Spain’s victory on Sunday gave Rodriguez Ortego and her Spanish teammates a measure of revenge over the French who edged Spain in the 2014 title game. Both teams entered the 2015 championship undefeated, but the Spaniards dominated the game in the end winning the contest by 19 points.

Rodriguez Ortego averaged 3.8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 14.1 minutes per game at the European Championship Tournament. Her top performances came against the Czech Republic and Russia. Against the Czechs during the first group stage she recorded eight points, three rebounds, two assists and one steal in a 77-51 Spanish victory. She matched that point total in Spain’s 76-50 semifinal win over Russia this past Saturday, July 11, accumulating eight points, a tournament-high five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 20 minutes of action.
