Rodriguez Ortego Helps Spain to 61-40 Victory Over Turkey

UDINE, Italy - Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego recovered from a disappointing defeat on Tuesday at the hands of Russia to crush Turkey this afternoon. It was a dominating performance for Spain in its 61-40 victory over the Turks in the final game of Group play to clinch a top seed into Friday’s quarterfinals of the 2014 FIBA European U20 Women’s Basketball Championship in Udine, Italy.

The Spaniards opened up Wednesday with a dominating first quarter racing out to a commanding 21-1 lead after the first quarter. Spain never looked back as they put away the Turks with ease. Rodriguez Ortego was solid on the floor playing 28 minutes at the point and recording three points, five rebounds, and one steal.

Rodriguez Ortego completed the two group stages at the Euros coming in off the bench to average 4.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.5 steals in 23.3 minutes per game through six contest.

On Tuesday, Spain stumbled in the second game of Group E play falling to Russia 77-69 for its first loss of the tournament. Rodriguez Ortego finished with four points, one rebound, one assist and two steals in 17 minutes.

Next up for Rodriguez Ortego and Spain following a day off on Thursday is a quarterfinal match-up Friday afternoon with Poland who finished its two group stages with a 3-3 record.
