BOISE, Idaho - Boise State women’s basketball player Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego has been named to the Spanish U20 national team that will compete in next month’s European Championship in Italy. The sophomore-to-be from the city of Esplugues de Llobregat (near Barcelona) is one of 12 players selected to represent Spain in the tournament. The U20 championship will be held July 3-13 at Udine, Italy, located in the northeast corner of the country near the border with Slovenia.

Rodriguez Ortego has spent the last 10 days participating in training camp and playing in a warm-up tournament as she competed for a spot on the team. During the tournament last weekend Rodriguez Ortego averaged five points, two rebounds and one assist as she helped the Spaniards go undefeated (2-0) to win the title of the third International Tournament Vila de Noia that was played in Spain. She officially made the final cut after the tournament title run and will take part in the FIBA European Championship in two weeks.

Rodriguez Ortego and her teammates will have the challenge of defending Spain’s three-consecutive titles at the U20 European Championship. Though this is her first time competing on the U20 team in this prestigious event, it is her fifth-consecutive summer representing Spain as a member of its national team program.

She spent last summer on the U19 team that finished fourth at the FIBA World Championship in Lithuania during July, as well as being a member of the U18 European Championship team that won the title in Croatia in late August. In 2012 the Boise State point guard was on the Spanish national U17 team that placed second at the World Championship held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2011 Rodriguez Ortego helped her U16 national team to the European title in Cagliari, Italy. Her first appearance for Spain was as a member of the 2010 U15 national team.

Rodriguez Ortego and her Spanish teammates will open their European title defense on July 3 when they face France in the first of three “Group B” games which also includes Greece and Latvia. Spain will play Greece on July 4 followed by Latvia on July 5.
