BOISE, Idaho (May 18, 2015) - The Boise State women's basketball program has signed Gabriella (Ella) Fotu to a National Letter of Intent as announced by head coach Gordy Presnell this morning. Fotu comes to Boise State from Auckland, New Zealand, and will join the Broncos in late August when classes begin. The 5-foot-10 guard/wing has been a member of the New Zealand Junior National Team for the last four years. Her signing gives Boise State a four member freshman class for this fall joining Joyce Harrell, Jordan Tully and Marta Hermida.

"Ella is an athletic guard whose strengths lie in her ability to drive to the basket and create offense for herself and her teammates," coach Presnell said. "She is strong and powerful, and, will provide rebounding from the perimeter. She is a team first competitor who will add to our winning mentality."

Fotu is a member of the New Zealand Junior National Team pool and has represented her nation on the U16, U17 and U18 teams, as well as on the U19 3x3 National Team. Fotu was a reserve member of the 2014 New Zealand Junior Tall Ferns (U19) that advanced to the FIBA Oceania Championship this past December.

She currently plays for the club team North Harbour in Auckland where she averaged 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, one block and five steals per game this past season playing for the U23 team.

As a member of the club's 2013 U23 squad she averaged 22.5 points and 14.8 rebounds in 30 minutes per game, helping the team to the New Zealand national championship and earning Tournament MVP honors in the process.

Some of Fotu's other honors include being named the 2013 Auckland Basketballer of the Year and the 2014 Maori and Pasifika Sportswoman of the Year.

The future Bronco played her prep ball for the Rangitoto College (high school) team helping the squad to a runner-up finish at the 2013 New Zealand Secondary School National Championship Tournament, in addition to two third-place finishes in 2011 and 2012.

Fotu is the first Bronco from New Zealand in the program's 45-year history. She will be the fifth international student-athlete on the 2015-16 Boise State roster joining Canadians Lexie Der and Jordan Tully, as well as Spaniards Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego and Marta Hermida.
