Boise State's season comes to an end at TCU 85-56...

FORT WORTH, Texas (3/23/08)- TCU stormed past Boise State 85-56 on Easter Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas to end the Broncos season with a WNIT second round defeat. The Lady Frogs seemed bigger and a step quicker than Boise State all night as the Broncos struggled to string anything together. Tasha Harris’ team-high 25 points was not enough to keep Boise State in the game as the Broncos committed a season high 26 turnovers.

Boise State started the game by scoring the first five points of the first period. Unfortunately, that was about all that went right for the Broncos. TCU stormed past Boise State with ease on a 12-0 run to take a 14-7 lead six minutes into the stanza. The Lady Frogs not only erased the Bronco early advantage, they sprinted out to a 23-point, 45-22, halftime lead. The Broncos struggled to hit their shots making 32 percent (8-25) in the opening 20 minutes compared to TCU’s 41.5 percent (17-41). Add in the Lady Frogs domination of the boards by a 29-to-18 margin and things were not looking good for the blue and orange.

The second half was just as hard for Boise State as the first. After digging themselves a huge 23-point hole in the opening half, the Broncos were unable to get any closer than 18 points early in the second period. Every time it looked like Boise State might make a run, a Bronco turnover or a clutch TCU basket would end any hope of a rally.

Boise State did play TCU closer in the second period as the Frogs outscored the Broncos by six, 40-34, in the final 20 minutes. Give TCU credit in their performance as their team, that is dominated by five seniors, controlled every aspect of the game with their size, speed, and energy. They won most of the free balls and did a great job forcing turnovers in addition to boxing out on the defensive boards. Once they claimed the lead they never allowed the Broncos back into the game.

On the night, Boise State shot 41.2 percent (21-51) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-16) from the arc, and 53.3 percent (8-15) from the free-throw line. TCU countered with 43.8 percent (32-73) shooting from the court, 47.6 percent (10-21) from behind the arc, and 52.4 percent (11-21) from the charity stripe. The Lady Frogs took 22 more shots than Boise State do to rebounding and turnovers. They won the paint 38-to-22, the points off turnovers 24-to-19, second chance points 13-to-six, fast break points 16-to-four, and bench points 26-to-11.

Tasha Harris finished with the team-high 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting to go with her five rebounds, one assist, and one steal. No one else recorded double-figure points for Boise State, only the second time this season that has happen. Jessica Thompson was second in scoring with nine points followed by Jenna Galassi’s eight, and Brittany Moore’s seven. Ja'Lara Walker had a team-high 10 boards.

TCU had three players in double-figure points, one with a double-double. Adrianne Ross led in points with 22 while adding three rebounds, two assists, and four steals. Lori Butler-Rayford recorded the double-double on 21 points and a team-high 13 rebounds, followed by Helen Roden with 11 points.

The loss ends Boise State’s season at 24-8 overall tying the school record for wins. The Broncos also set a new school record for points in a season breaking last year’s mark (2,275) with 2,330. They won back-to-back WAC regular season titles, completed their first ever consecutive 20-win seasons, and advanced to their second straight national postseason tournament, a program first. Better yet, the overwhelming majority of the team returns next year along with five redshirts. The careers of seniors Jackie Lee and Amanda Stewart came to an end this evening as well. They finished as the first winning class since the 2001 group.

TCU improves to 22-11 and advances to a third round meeting at Texas Tech this Wednesday night in Lubbock, Texas.
