Broncos fall to New Mexico 51-50 in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Boise State had a chance to win at the buzzer but came up short as the Broncos fell 51-50 in a heartbreaking loss to New Mexico in the semifinals of the 2012 Conoco Mountain West Basketball Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. Down one with 27 seconds left, Boise State's Kati Isham drove into the key then pulled up for a shot from just inside the free-throw line which fell short off the rim. Julia Marshall came away with the rebound in the ensuing scramble, then went back up with a shot which was blocked at the buzzer giving the Lobos the semifinal victory.

"I am really proud of my team and the way they came back in the second half," said head coach Gordy Presnell. "They battled hard and gave it their best, it just did not go our way."

Lauren Lenhardt led Boise State in the contest with her third double-double of the year on 18 points and team-high 10 rebounds in 34 minutes of action. The three seniors followed Lenhardt as they wrapped up their careers Friday afternoon in Las Vegas. Nicole Brady was the only other Bronco to reach double digit points finishing with 13, Heather Pilcher added eight points and team-high four assists, while Kati Isham recorded five points and two boards.

New Mexico opened the first half with intensity scoring the first six points of the contest. The Lobos held onto the lead until late in the second period. The game was tight throughout the 40 minutes of action with New Mexico taking a game-high 12-point advantage twice late in the first half, including a 29-17 lead at the break.

Boise State bumped up its intensity and pushed the tempo in the second frame as the Broncos rallied to take a brief three point lead, 44-41, with six minute to go on a Lenhardt layup and a pair of Pilcher free-throws.

Unfortunately, UNM rallied to retake the lead for good on a Nikki Nelson 3-pointer from the top of the arc with 3:47 left. After trading baskets down the stretch Boise State found itself down five with 1:41 on the clock.

That setup the final moments of the game that saw Brady hit a layup at the 1:23 mark to cut the deficit to three, 51-48. On the ensuing Lobo possession the Broncos trapped in the back court forcing a turnover when Kinzi Poteet dove onto a loose ball, Boise State called time out immediately with Poteet laying on the court with the ball. The Broncos then in bounded the ball leading to another Brady layup with one minute to play and the Broncos down one, 51-50.

With time running down on the shot clock on UNM's next possession a Lauren Taylor 3-pointer was off target resulting in a Boise State defensive rebound and time out. That rebound setup the final sequence that gave the Broncos a chance to win. On this day Boise State came up short losing by one at the buzzer to the Lobos.

The loss ends the Broncos season at 15-16 overall, their first in the Mountain West Conference.
