Bos leads team with 14 points.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. (3/9/2011) - Boise State University’s women’s basketball team closed its Western Athletic Conference membership Wednesday night in Las Vegas, Nev., with a 70-59 loss to the University of Idaho in the opening round of the championship event in the Orleans Arena. The Broncos fought hard but could not overcome the Vandals 3-point and free throw shooting. Idaho extended a seven-point, 33-26, halftime lead to as many as 17 in the second half to eliminate eighth-seeded Boise State from the tournament. Senior forward Janie Bos led the Broncos with 14 points and six rebounds, both team-highs.

The first half was a battle with neither team gaining a lead larger than six points. Boise State opened the contest with the first basket on a Diana Lee pull-up jumper from 16 feet. Idaho responded by scoring the next five points for the lead which the Vandals did not relinquish in the first period. The largest lead for Idaho was six-points at 27-21 with 4:51 to go in the half.

For Boise State, the Broncos struggled with containing Yinka Olorunnife who recorded 19 of her game-high 21 points in the first half on six-of-eight shooting, three-of-five from the arc. She was Idaho’s lone offensive threat in the opening 20 minutes as no one else had more than five points. Janie Bos led Boise State with seven points followed by Diana Lee with six.

The second half was one of streaks with the Vandals opening a 12-point, 40-28, lead early in the period. Boise State came back cutting the deficit to six, 48-42, with 9:31 to go. Unfortunately, that was as close as the Broncos would get in the final nine and a half minutes.

Idaho used a 14-3 run to seize momentum and the game as they took a game-high 17-point, 62-45, lead with 5:36 remaining. Their lead then fluctuated between 17 and 11 points the rest of the way as the Vandals eventually claimed the 11-point victory over the Broncos.

Boise State was led by Janie Bos who was the only Boise State player to reach double-figure points with 14 to go with six boards in her final game as a Bronco. Kati Isham added seven points followed by Lauren Lenhardt, Diana Lee and Melissa Rima with six each.

The Broncos shot 37.9 percent (22-58) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-11) from the arc and 70.6 percent (12-17) from the free-throw line. Boise State made more field goals than Idaho 22 to 21, had more rebounds 32 to 31, more points in the paint 32 to 16, more points off turnovers 17 to 10, more second chance points 12 to seven and more bench points 21 to 15.

However, Idaho mad five more 3-pointers eight to three and eight more free throws 20 to 12, enough to give the Vandals the win. Idaho shot 50 percent (21-42) from the floor, 47.1 percent (8-17) from beyond the arc and 74.1 percent (20-27) from the charity stripe. Olorunnife finished the game with a team-highs for points and rebounds with 21 and 13 respectively. Rachele Kloke added 12 points followed by Keri Arendse with nine.
