Boise State Clinches Winning Season with 56-45 Victory at San Jose State?
SAN JOSE, Calif. (2/27/09) Courtney VanBrocklin and Brittany Moore combined for 22 second-half points to lead the Broncos to their third-consecutive road victory, 56-45 over San Jose State Friday night in San Jose, Calif. The 11-point win clinched Boise State its third-straight winning season and fourth non-losing campaign under head coach Presnell.
The Broncos used a late first-half surge to take control of a tight contest in SJSU’s Events Center. With the score tied 16-16 at the 8:53 mark, Boise State slowly pulled away from the Spartans with an 11-2 run to close the half up nine-points 27-18 at the break. Freshman Heather Pilcher recorded eight of her 10 points during the opening 20 minutes to help give the Broncos momentum going into halftime.
The second half opened with two Boise State turnovers while San Jose State closed to within five-points, 30-25, with 16 minutes remaining. The Broncos’ VanBrocklin and Moore then began to warm-up combining for an 11-4 run to stake the visitor’s a nine-point advantage at 41-32, with 9:46 showing on the clock.
One minute later Boise State stretched its lead to a game-high 13 points, 45-32, on a Heather Pilcher layup and two VanBrocklin free throws.
Down 13 on “Senior Night,” San Jose State battled back with an 8-0 run to cut their deficit to five points at 45-40 with 5:49 to go.
Up five 47-42 with 4:42 left Boise State began to assert itself once again holding the Spartans to three points down the stretch.
With 29 seconds remaining the Broncos had slowly pulled out to a double-digit lead of 12-points, 56-44, capped off with a Jamia Malone free throw (one-of-two) followed by a pair from VanBrocklin to close out the Boise State scoring.
San Jose State’s Ashley Brown closed the game making one of two free throws making the final Bronco victory margin 11 points at the buzzer.
Turnovers played a key role in this game as they kept the game close but still gave the Broncos an advantage. Boise State outscored San Jose State 30-10 in points off turnovers.
Three Broncos recorded double-figure points led by VanBrocklin’s 16 points to go with four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Senior Brittany Moore was second with 15 points and three boards, she shot 50 percent (6-12) from the floor and from three-point range (3-6). Meanwhile, Pilcher finished with 10 points, one rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
San Jose State was led by one player in double-figure scoring, Chasity Shavers’ 11 points along with four rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal. Shaunna Ridge and Ashley Brown each finished with eight points, Ridge had a team-best eight rebounds.
The win improves the Broncos to 16-12 overall and 9-5 in league play. San Jose State falls to 1-14 in WAC and 2-26 overall. Next up for Boise State is a trip to Honolulu where they will play the Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Sunday evening, tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. (Mountain).
