Broncos Clinch Winning Season with 73-63 Victory over Idaho...
BOISE, Idaho (2/17/2010) - Boise State dominated Idaho at home with a 73-63 victory over its rival Wednesday night in Taco Bell Arena. The Broncos used a 12-0 run midway through the first half to break the game open and seized control stretching their advantage to double figures by the end of the period. Up 10 at halftime, Boise State built an 18-point lead early in the second stanza then held the Vandals off as the visitors could get no closer than seven points in the final period.

Four Broncos recorded double-figure points in the key Western Athletic Conference victory as Boise State clinched its fourth-consecutive winning season and fifth over .500 under coach Gordy Presnell. Boise State improves to 16-9 overall and 5-6 in league play. In addition, the Broncos are now 12-1 at home this year.

Tasha Harris led Boise State with a team-high 17 points to go with six rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Rebecca Kepilino added 14 points and five rebounds followed by Janie Bos’ double-double on 12 points and team-high 10 rebounds, while Melissa Rima chipped in 12 points and four boards.

The first period was close for the first 13 minutes with the Vandals taking their largest lead of the game at 12-7 with 15:04 to go before half. The Broncos then rallied with a 9-0 run to take a 16-12 lead by the 11 minute mark.

Idaho would regain the lead for the last time shortly after that when they scored five straight points for a 17-16 advantage. Up 20-19 at the 7:10 mark, Boise State rolled off a 12-0 run to seize control of the contest with a 32-19 lead. The Broncos stretched the advantage to 13 points before settling for a 10-point 35-25 lead at the break.

Boise State’s Harris paced the Broncos in the opening 20 minutes with 14 of her 17 points coming in the first period. She only attempted two shots in the second half as Idaho made adjustments at the break to close the senior down in the final period.

Up 10, Boise State opened the second half by extending its lead to a game-high 18 points twice, the last came with 9:54 to play at 58-40. Rebecca Kepilino recorded seven of the points while Melissa Rima added six during the first 10 minutes as the lead grew to 18.

However, down 18 the Vandals rallied with a 9-0 run to get themselves back into the contest pulling to within 58-49 by the 7:55 mark. From that point on the game remained a seven to 12 point contest. The closest Idaho would get in the final half was seven points at 66-59 with 2:17 showing on the clock. The teams then traded points before the buzzer sounded with the Bronco 10-point victory margin at 73-63.

Idaho was led by Rachele Kloke who struggled with foul trouble throughout the game to finish with a team-high 17 points and three rebounds in 21 minutes of play. Charlotte Otero was second with 16 points to go with three boards and five assists. Yinka Olorunnife added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Boise State finished the night shooting 40.9 percent (27-66) from the floor, 30.8 percent (4-13) from the 3-point arc and 71.4 percent (15-21) from the free-throw line. Idaho countered with 36.4 percent (20-55) shooting from the court, 26.9 percent (7-26) from the arc and 72.7 percent (16-22) from the charity stripe.

Rebounding was a tight battle with the Broncos holding a 39-38 advantage. Boise State dominated the paint out scoring the Vandals 36 to 20 down low.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak to Idaho as the Broncos improve their series advantage to 37-28 and take sole possession of fifth place in the WAC standings, the two teams were tied entering the night.  Idaho falls to 6-18 overall and 4-7 in conference play with the loss.  Next up for the Broncos is a two-game road trip to San Jose State and Hawai’i.  Boise State will look to snap an eight-game road losing streak this Saturday night at San Jose State with an 8:00 p.m. (Mountain) tip in the Events Center.
