FRESNO, California - (2/17/07) - Boise State battled hard but fell to Fresno State 69-61 in a Western Athletic Conference women’s basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, California.  Down two starters and outmanned by the athletic Fresno State Bulldogs, the Broncos still managed to be in the game from the tip. In fact, the Broncos had chances to potentially pull off the victory down the stretch but a few executions errors and poor free throw shooting doomed them in the end.

The game started out with the two teams trading baskets and leads through the first four minutes. At the 15:24 mark of the first half Andrea Roberson sunk a layup to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. From that point on Fresno State’s lead would fluctuate between nine and three points for most of the final 35 minutes. Everytime the Broncos would cut the lead the Bulldogs answered. The first half ended with the Bulldogs up nine, 38-29, and holding an advantage on the boards 27-to-19.

The second half was similar to the first with the Bulldogs maintaining a narrow lead throughout. Foul trouble began to take it’s toll on the Broncos as Jackie Lee, Rebecca Kepilino, and Michelle Hessing all had four with 10 minutes to go. Kepilino and Lee, two players the Broncos needed points from, eventually fouled out by the three minute mark, combining for nine points and 11 rebounds between them.

Despite the foul trouble, Boise State kept picking away at Fresno State pulling to within 55-54 with 5:54 to go on five straight points by Michelle Hessing, including a three-pointer from the top of the arc to make it a one point game. Two free throws from Paige Diggs and a steal by Chantella Perera followed by a Diggs layup gave the Bulldogs a five-point lead, 59-54, with 5:19 to left.

Boise State cut the lead back to two points, 59-57, on a Reyes three-pointer from the right wing with just under five minutes remaining. Unfortunately, Boise State hit just two of their ten shots in the final five minutes in addition to committing three turnovers. Meanwhile, Fresno State closed the game on a 10-4 run to claim the hard fought victory by a nine-point margin, 69-61.

Three Broncos recorded double-figure point games led by sophomore Tasha Harris with 16 points and six rebounds, while tying her season high for assists with six in 32 minutes of action. Freshman point guard Bridgette Reyes matched Harris’ points with a career high 16 in 26 minutes of playing time. Senior Michelle Hessing, who was double teamed most the night, finished with 15 points on seven-of-nine shooting from the floor, six rebounds, and two blocks. Hessing, Harris, Begay, and Lee all recorded six rebounds to lead the Broncos on the glass.

Tierre Wilson led Fresno State with 16 points and 12 rebounds to record one of two double-doubles in the game for the Bulldogs. The second was by Erica Henry with 12 points and 12 rebounds, followed by 12 points from Chantella Perera.

Boise State shot 35.3 percent (24-of-68) from the floor, 30 percent (6-of-20) from three-point range, and 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from the foul line. Fresno State countered with 38.2 percent (21-of-55) shooting from the hardwood, 25 percent (4-of-16) from behind the arc, and 59 percent (23-of-39) from the charity stripe.  The Bulldogs had 23 more free throw attempts than the Broncos who were called for a season high 28  fouls compared to 16 for Fresno State

Boise State continues to play without the services of senior starter Jackie Thompson at power forward missing her eighth consecutive game do to injury. However against Fresno State today, the Broncos were also without leading scorer Jessica Thompson who was left home to recover from illness. Both are now listed at day-to-day.
