Boise State Falters Down the Stretch in 85-76 loss at New Mexico State ...

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (2/6/2010) - Boise State’s shot failed them at the wrong time as the Broncos faltered down the stretch in a 85-76 loss at New Mexico State in Las Cruces Saturday night. The road woes continue for the Broncos who watched a 10-point second half lead evaporate as the Aggies rallied for the win in the Pan American Center. Melissa Rima led Boise State with a career night on 24 points and 12 rebounds to record her first double-double of the season and second of her career.

The game was a battle from the start and by the end of the 40 minutes the contest saw seven ties and 16 leads changes. The largest lead of the night was a 10-point Boise State advantage at 53-43 with 14:54 to play. The Aggies largest lead was nine points which they had three late in the game.

The first half’s largest margin was five-points by NMSU early in the contest. Boise State rallied and after exchanging five ties and 11 leads the Broncos eventually took a one-point 36-35 advantage into the break.

Boise State opened the second period stretching its advantage to a game-high 10 points, 53-43, with just under 15 minutes to play. However, New Mexico State rallied with a 17-6 run to take a 60-59 lead when Jasmine Lowe converted on a conventional three-point play with 9:18 remaining.

The Broncos briefly regained the lead when Rima hit two free throws with 8:48 left making the score 61-60. The Fairbanks, Alaska native played fearless tonight driving consistently into traffic to finished the night hitting a career high 16 free throws on 19 attempts.   

Unfortunately, the Aggies Danisha Corbett responded with back-to-back 3-pointers to give NMSU a 66-61 lead with 7:38 on the clock. The first gave the Aggies the lead for good.

Boise State had opportunities down the stretch but failed to convert on them as the missed numerous close range shots and committed a few turnovers. Meanwhile, New Mexico State slowly extended its lead to a NMSU-high nine points with 1:01 to go. The Aggies closed the game out scoring the Broncos 25-10 in the final eight minutes, they hit five 3-pointers in that stretch and went 8-of-13 in the second half from beyond the arc. 

Rima finished the night leading the Broncos with 24 points, 16 in the second half, 12 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Tasha Harris followed with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. Janie Bos was the only other Broncos in double-figures adding 14 points and nine boards.

Jasmine Lowe led New Mexico State with 23 points, four rebounds and four assists. Corbett was second with 18 points and four boards, followed by Crystal Boyd’s 15 points, and six rebounds.

Next up for Boise State is a two-game homestand versus Nevada this Wednesday and Idaho on Wednesday Feb. 17.
