MOSCOW, Idaho - (2/7/07) - Boise State bounced back from last Saturday’s loss to Louisiana Tech with a dominating performance over their in-state rivals the Idaho Vandals, handing their hosts a 70-40 defeat at the Cowan Spectrum in Moscow Wednesday night. It was the second time in two weeks that the Broncos have defeated the Vandals by 30 points following a 85-55 victory in Boise on Jan. 27. The win also insures the Broncos of their first conference winning season since joining the WAC and since the 1997-98 team went 11-3 in Big West play.
Idaho opened the game by taking an early 3-2 lead on a Liz Witte three-pointer two minutes into the game. However, that was the last lead the Vandals would have as the Broncos used a 14-1 run early in the first half to seize control of the game with 12 minutes to play and the score reading 16-4. Following Idaho’s initial three-point play by Witte, the Vandals went nearly nine minutes before recording their second field goal.
Eventually, Boise State took a 12-point lead into the half up 34-22 powered by 10 Jackie Lee points in the period. Boise State shot a solid 54.2 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes compared to Idaho’s 38.9 percent. The two teams combined for 29 turnovers in a rather ugly period of action.
The second half was all Boise State as the Broncos put game away with solid defense and a balanced offense out scoring the Vandals 36-18 in the final 20 minutes. The visitors quickly pushed their advantage to 18 points less than four minutes into the period at 42-24 with 16:45 to go.
After Idaho had cut the Boise State lead to 11 points, 47-36, with 11:26 remaining, Jessica Thompson lit the Vandals up with her own 8-to-2 run in the next two minutes to spark the Broncos giving her team a 55-38 lead. She ended the period scoring 15 of her team high points in the final half.
Idaho never recovered from Thompson’s run as the Vandals managed only four points in the final 11 and half minutes of the game. In the meantime, the Broncos continued with the pressure and stretched their lead to a game high 30 points, 70-40, with one minute to go. Neither team scored in the closing minute as the Broncos claimed the season sweep over the Vandals.
All ten Broncos who saw action scored in the game. Jessica Thompson led three Broncos in double-figure scoring with 18 points to go with her one rebound, two assists, and two steals. Senior Michelle Hessing finished with 14 points and five rebounds while Jackie Lee added 12 points and seven boards. Sophomore Rebecca Kepilino led the Broncos on the glass with a team high nine rebounds in addition to her eight points. Liz Witte and Katie Madison led Idaho with 11 points apiece. Katie Schlotthauer led the Vandals on the boards with eight to go with her six points, followed by Madison and Stephanie Jones with five rebounds each.
The win keeps Boise State in first place of the WAC at 9-1 while improving to 18-5 overall. Idaho moves to 5-17 overall and 2-9 in league play. Next up for Boise State is San Jose State (3-21, WAC 2-8), who plays at Louisiana Tech Thursday night, Saturday at Bronco Gym tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
