Bronco Women Fall to Rainbow Wahine, 69-53
HONOLULU, Hawaii (2/2/2011) - In a late game on the Island of Oahu, the Boise State University's women's basketball team fell 69-53 at the University of Hawai'i Wednesday night. The loss evens the team's overall record to 11-11 on the year, while falling to 2-6 in Western Athletic Conference play.
It was a cold night for the Broncos who could not get anything to fall for them in the game. Boise State trailed by 14 at the half and 23 midway through the second. Heather Pilcher led the Broncos in scoring with a season-high 11 points which included three-of-five shooting from the arc. The loss was Boise State's fourth straight as its falls to 11-11 on the year and 2-6 in league play, Hawai'i improved to 7-15 and 1-8 in WAC.
As they have most of the season the Broncos opened the game flat hitting just one of their first 10 shots to find themselves in a early hole. They were down 14-6 at the 12-minute mark of the first period. The next six minutes saw the teams trade baskets as the Hawai'i lead fluctuated between five and eight points.
Down eight, 23-15, with 6:43 left the Broncos rallied with a 9-2 run to cut the deficit to one at 25-24 with four minutes to go. That was as close as they would get in the game as things then went south for Boise State who scored just one more point to close the half. Meanwhile, Hawai'i hit two field goals and went 10-for-10 from the free-throw line to close the period on a 14-1 run to take a 14-point 39-25 lead into the break. The Rainbow Wahine had a huge advantage at the free-throw line in the first period making 17-of-18 compared to six-of-11 for Boise State.
The second half saw Hawai'i open the period with a 22-6 run to blow the game open as the Rainbow Wahine raced out to a 20-point lead at 51-31 with 13 minutes to play. Things did not get much better for Boise State as they were a step slow to the ball all night as Hawai'i won most loose balls. The Broncos never seriously challenged after that initial run to open the second half. The Wahine eventually stretched their lead to a game-high 23 points on several occasions late in the contest.
It was one of those nights where things just did not go right for the Broncos who struggled shooting. They shot 26.3 percent (15-57) from the floor, 33.3 percent (6-18) from the arc and 56.7 percent (17-30) from the free-throw line.
Heather Pilcher led the Broncos hitting three-of-five 3-pointers for a season-high 11 points and team-high seven rebounds. No other Broncos would hit double-figure points as Boise State's scoring leaders on the year Kait Isham and Lauren Lenhardt combined for 10 points, they entered the game averaging 28.7 per game. Isham did have a team second-best eight points, Diana Lee and Cinnamon Lister each finished with seven points.
Keisha Kanekoa led Hawai'i with 17 points followed by Shawna-Lei Kuehu with 15 points and Megan Tinnin with 12. Kamilah Jackson had a team-high 10 rebounds.
The Rainbow Wahine shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor, 16.7 percent (2-12) from the arc and 73.5 percent (25-34) from the free-throw line. Hawai'i out rebounded the Broncos 45 to 33 for a 15 to seven edge in second chance points.
Next up for Boise State is a home game on Saturday against Utah State University at 7:00 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
