Boise State Rally Falls Short in 93-86 Loss to La Tech

BOISE, Idaho (1/29/2011) - Boise State University’s rally attempt late in the game fell short as the Broncos lost a 93-86 women’s basketball shootout to Louisiana Tech University Saturday night in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. Down 15 points with five minutes to play, Boise State stormed back to make the outcome interesting pulling to within four points twice with under a minute to go. The Lady Techsters held the Broncos off at the free-throw line converting 13-of-18 attempts in the final two minutes to get the victory. Kati Isham led Boise State with 20 points including hitting six-of-nine 3-point attempts as the Broncos fell to 11-10 on the year and 2-5 in Western Athletic Conference play, La Tech remains perfect in league play at 7-0 and 15-5 overall.

After Boise State scored the opening basket for a 2-0 lead, Louisiana Tech scored the next nine points to take the lead early. The Lady Techsters never relinquished the lead the rest of the game, but the Broncos made it interesting down the stretch.

The Broncos found themselves in a hole early once again down 10 points, 14-4, five minutes into the contest. Boise State rallied to within two points at 16-14 with 13:22 left but could not pull even. That was as close as they would get the rest of the contest.

Louisiana Tech eventually stretched its lead out to 15 points twice late in the first period, the last came at 50-35 with 29 seconds to go before the break. The Broncos went into the half down 13, 50-37, following a Stacie Gross jumper with five seconds left.

Turnovers crushed the Broncos in the first half giving it away 12 times compared to La Tech’s five, resulting in a 21 to eight advantage in points off turnovers for the Lady Techsters by half.

The second half was a much closer contest as the Broncos out scored the visiting Lady Techsters 49 to 43. La Tech took its largest lead of the game at 64-47, 17 points, four minutes into the period. For most of the next 11 minutes the Boise State deficit fluctuated between 15 and 10 points.

Down 15, 79-64, with 4:59 to go, the Broncos rallied. They denied the Lady Techsters another field goal the rest of the way as La Tech was forced to hold the Broncos off from the free-throw line.

In the final five minutes Boise State made five field goals, three from beyond the arc and went eight-for-eight from the foul line. Isham scored the final eight points for Boise State in the last 1:05 of the game before fouling out with 28 seconds left. Her last points were a pair of free-throws with 29 seconds to go pulling the Broncos to within four at 90-86.

Louisiana Tech’s last field goal of the game came at 4:59 on a Tarkeisha Wysinger-Mackey layup making the score 79-64. The Lady Techsters were then forced to the free-throw line to finish the game out where they converted 14-of-20 to hold off Boise State, including the final three points of the contest after the Broncos had closed to within four.

It was a valiant effort by Boise State to come back on the league leaders. But the early first half hole cost the Broncos again as they were forced to play catch-up all night. The second half saw Boise State control the ball better making only five turnovers in the period. On the night points off turnovers were a huge advantage for Louisiana Tech by a 28 to 10 margin.

La Tech also took advantage of its athleticism pushing the ball up the floor at every opportunity out scoring Boise State 24 to zero in fast break points and 42 to 28 on points in the paint.

Isham led Boise State with 20 points, two rebounds and one assist. Three other Broncos recorded double-figure points as well led by a career-night for Nicole Brady with 15 points including three-of-six shooting from the arc, Lauren Lenhardt and Janie Bos added 14 point each. Brady, Lenhardt and Bos all tied for the team-high in rebounds with eight each as the Broncos out rebounded the Lady Techsters 41 to 34. Boise State’s bench was big out scoring La Tech’s 39 to 13.

Six Lady Techsters finished in double-digit points led by Adrienne Johnson with 21 and six rebounds. Wysinger-Mackey followed with 19 points and a team-high eight boards. Whitney Jones had 17 points followed by Jasmine Bendolph with 13, Brietta Thomas with 12 and Shantale Bramble-Donaldson with 10.

Boise State finished the night shooting 42 percent (29-69) from the floor, 43.5 percent (10-23) from the arc and 85.7 percent (18-21) from the free-throw line. La Tech shot 52.5 percent (32-61) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-18) from the 3-point arc and 66.7 percent (24-36) from the foul line.
