Boise State Falls at Home 87-71 to New Mexico State...
Lenhardt scores 30 for second time in three games.
BOISE, Idaho (1/27/2011) - Lauren Lenhardt’s 30 points were not enough as Boise State University’s women’s basketball team fell victim to New Mexico State University’s hot shooting from the 3-point arc in a 87-71 loss in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. In addition to the Aggies 15-of-24 shooting from beyond the arc, Boise State came out slow to begin each half digging themselves big holes. The combination of the two cost the homestanding Broncos in the Western Athletic Conference defeat as they fell to 11-9 overall and 2-4 in league, while New Mexico State improved to 10-10 on the year and 4-2 in conference.
Boise State opened the game slow, struggling to get its shots to fall. Meanwhile, New Mexico State ran out to a 20-5 lead seven minutes into the half. The Aggies were on fire from the 3-point arc in the period going eight-of-12 as they stretched their lead to 17, 24-7, with 11 minutes to go. Danisha Corbett was four-of-four from beyond the arc as she recorded 15 first half points to lead NMSU at intermission.
NMSU maintained a double-digit lead for most of the opening 20 minutes of play with the Broncos making charges. Boise State road the backs of Diana Lee and Lauren Lendardt who scored 10 points each as the Broncos pulled to within seven at 36-29 with 1:40 left in the first period. Unfortunately, the Aggies finished the half scoring the final five points to take a 12-point 41-29 advantage into the break.
The Broncos came out flat in the second period as the Aggies rolled off a 13-4 run to extended their lead to a game-high 21 points at 54-33 four minutes into the half. New Mexico State hit four of its first five shots including three treys as they pulled away.
Boise State rallied to cut the deficit to eight points at 69-61 with 4:44 to go and could have made it closer but miss fired. In the end the Broncos did not play all that bad once they got moving, they just could not stop the Aggies outside game.
Turnovers cost Boise State as well committing 17 resulting in a 21 to 15 edge in points off turnovers for NMSU. The Broncos pushed inside in the final 20 minutes where Lenhardt scored 20 of her game-high 30 points to go with 10 rebounds. It was her second game with 30-plus points in the last three contests and her third double-double of the new year. She finished the night hitting 12-of-18 from the floor and six-of-six from the free-throw line.
The Broncos out rebounded the Aggies in the second period 21 to 11, including 11 to three in offensive boards for a 16 to four advantage in second chance points, on the night it was a 20 to six advantage.
Kati Isham scored 14 points to go with six rebounds, two assists, and two steals, while Diana Lee added 12 points, two boards, two assists and one steal. Boise State shot 41.3 percent (26-63) from the floor, 26.3 percent (5-19) from the arc and 87.5 percent (14-16) from the foul line.
Danisha Corbett led NMSU going seven-of-nine from the 3-point line to finish with 31 points and six rebounds. Madison Spence followed with 18 points going four-of-four from the arc, while Jasmine Lowe added 17 points and Tabytha Wampler chipped in 10. The Aggies shot 50.8 percent (30-59) from the floor, 62.5 percent (15-24) from the arc and 85.7 percent (12-14) from the free-throw line.
Next up for Boise State is a home encounter Saturday night against league leading Louisiana Tech at 7:00 p.m. in Taco Bell Arena.
