BOISE, Idaho - (1/24/07) - The Boise State women’s basketball team took care of business Wednesday night in their first home game in nearly three weeks as they defeated the Utah State Aggies in impressive fashion 80-38 at Taco Bell Arena. Sophomore Rebecca Kepilino led the Broncos with a double-double on a career high 22 points and 12 rebounds, while fellow sophomore Jessica Thompson followed with 21 points. The Broncos dominated from the opening tip as they ran out to a 27-point halftime lead.

The first encounter between the Aggies and Broncos saw the two battle from the start with Boise State pulling away in the final minutes of the game to win 80-70. The rematch Wednesday night in Boise was a completely different story as the Broncos ran away from the Aggies and were never threatened in the game.

After opening the game with four free throws to take a 4-0 lead, Boise State ran out to a 13-2 lead seven minutes into the game. The Broncos controlled the paint in the opening stanza out scoring Utah State 14-0 down low and held a 11-0 advantage in points off turnovers at halftime. The Broncos eventually claimed a 38-9 advantage by the intermission on 46.4 percent (13-of-28) shooting from the floor, 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from three-point range, and 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from the foul line. Meanwhile, Utah State struggled to hit a shot in the first 20 minutes going 3-of-26 (11.5 pct.) from the hardwood, 0-of-9 from behind the arc, and 3-of-6 (50 pct.) from the charity stripe.

Jackie Lee led the Broncos at the half with eight points and seven rebounds, followed by Michelle Hessing and Jessica Thompson with seven points each. Jamelah Brown had four points for the Aggies to lead them in scoring in the first period.

The second half was similar to the first as Boise State slowly stretched their lead into the 40’s late in the contest. Even though Utah State shot better in the second half hitting 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from the floor it was not good enough to close the gap as the Broncos continued to shoot well themselves. The Aggies were unable to get any closer than the 27 points at half.

Boise State’s lead fluctuated between 28 and 33 points for the first 12 minutes of the second half when the Broncos caught a second wind. Boise State finished the game out scoring the Aggies 20-11 in the final eight minutes and at one point led by 44 points, 77-33, with 2:17 left in the game.

Kepilino and Jess Thompson led the Broncos with 16 and 14 second half points respectively. Kepilino recorded a career high 22 points and completed her third career double-double with 12 rebounds. Thompson recorded her seventh game of the season with 20 plus points finishing with 21, while Michelle Hessing added 10 points. Lee finished with nine points while freshman Ja'Lara Walker had her best game of the season with a career high six points and three rebounds in 12 minutes of action.

Danyelle Snelgro led Utah State with 10 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Brittany Phillips backed her up with eight points and a team high seven rebounds.

On the night, Boise State shot 47.5 percent from the floor, 46.2 percent (6-of-13) from beyond the arc, and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free throw line. Utah State shot 22.6 percent fromthe floor, 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from three-point land, and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the foul line. It was complete domination for Boise State as they out rebounded Utah State 49-to-27 resulting in a 23-to-6 advantage in second chance points. The Broncos held the advantage in the paint 38-to-6 and in points off turnovers 22-to-11.

The win improves the Broncos to 15-4 on the season, it also keeps them undefeated and in first place in WAC play at 6-0. The loss drops Utah State to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in league. Boise State returns to action this Saturday night when they host in-state rival Idaho at 7:00 p.m. (mst) in Taco Bell Arena.
