Boise State impressive in 66-52 win at New Mexico State, Broncos claim first place In WAC ...

LAS CRUCES, New Mexico - (1/11/07) - The Boise State Broncos ran past the New Mexico State Aggies 66-52 in a key early WAC game Thursday night in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The two entered the day in a three-way tie for first place with Louisiana Tech at 2-0. The win propels Boise State into sole possession of first at 3-0 with a big game at Louisiana Tech pending this weekend. The Lady Techsters are idle until they host Boise State Saturday night. Jessica Thompson led the Broncos over New Mexico State tonight with 20 points, her fourth consecutive 20+ point game and sixth of the season.

Boise State ran out to an early 6-0 lead to start the contest an never trailed in the game. The Broncos stretched the lead to 16 midway through the first half as they played one of their best periods of the season. Boise State took a double-figure point advantage for good at 21-10 with nine minutes to go in the opening period as the Aggies struggled to get back into the contest.

The Broncos were on fire shooting 41 percent (12-of-29) from the floor, 55.6 percent (5-of-9) from three-point range, and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the foul line in the first half. They pushed the tempo and drove to the basket at will causing havoc for the New Mexico State defenders. As a result, the Aggies found themselves in early foul trouble which plagued them throughout the entire 40 minutes.

Sophomore guard Jessica Thompson led the Broncos with 14 first half points and ended the game with a team high 20. She was pulled midway through the second half once the game was under control with the Broncos up 25.

The second half started like the first ended, as the Broncos continued to run the quick paced game plan. The Aggies managed to cut the 13-point halftime lead to 10, 39-29, two minutes into the period but that was as close as they would ever get. Boise State answered with a 14-3 run in the next five minutes as they took a commanding 53-32 lead with 12:21 remaining.

Boise State slowly stretched it’s lead to 25 points with just under seven minutes to play on a Amanda Stewart jumper. The Broncos then pulled most of their starters and gave the younger players some quality minutes to gain needed experience, in addition to resting key players for Saturday’s game at league power Louisiana Tech.

The last five minutes were sloppy as the Aggies cut the lead to the final 14-point victory margin.

On the night, Boise State shot 44 percent from the hardwood, 45.5 percent from three-point range, and 70.8 percent from the charity stripe. NMSU struggled with their shooting hitting 36.4 percent from the floor, 6.7 percent (1-of-15) from behind the arc, and 68.8 percent from the foul line. The Broncos won the battle on the boards with 37 rebounds compared to the Aggies’ 33. The two combined for 45 turnovers as the teams had trouble protecting the ball at times, especially for the Broncos in the final five minutes.

Jess Thompson was the only Bronco to hit double-figure points with 20. She was followed by Jackie Thompson with eight, Michelle Hessing and Tasha Harris each added seven. Hessing had a team high eight rebounds. New Mexico State was led by three players in double-digit points beginning with Anikia Jawara with 14, Sherell Neal recorded a double-double on 11 points and 13 rebounds, followed by Tyshae Walton with 11 points.

Boise State played one of the best games of the season as they moved to 3-0 in WAC action for the first time in their six years of league membership. They continue to have the best start in 13 years as they improve to 12-4 overall on the season. Up next is a battle for first place when the Broncos travel to Ruston, Louisiana to face the five-time defending WAC champion Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters at 7:00 p.m. (central) Saturday night in the Thomas Assembly Center.
