Boise State Falls in WAC Opener 69-57 at Utah State...
Isham scores 18 in the loss.

LOGAN, Utah (1/6/2011) - It was a cold day in Logan, Utah, Thursday and unfortunately, just as cold a night for the Boise State women’s basketball team in the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum as the Broncos fell at Utah State 69-57 in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams. The Broncos opened flat and never recovered as the Aggies ran out to an 18-4 lead midway through the first half. Boise State shot poorly during the game, which included a 10-minute scoring drought in the first half, and had trouble holding onto the ball in the frustrating loss. Kati Isham led the Broncos with 18 points on the night followed by Lauren Lenhardt with 10.

Boise State opened ice cold as the Broncos struggled to get anything going in the game. Lauren Lenhardt hit a short jumper with 17:40 on the clock, the Broncos would not score again for nearly 10 minutes. They had several good chances but could not get anything to fall, many of them from short range. By the 14:39 mark both Kati Isham and Diana Lee had two personal fouls and were sitting on the bench, they did return later in the half.

Boise State was down 18-4 with just over eight minutes left in the period. The Broncos went 2-17 from the floor, 0-7 from the arc and turned it over eight times during the first 12 minutes of the game.

Down 14, Lenhardt ended the drought at the 7:57 mark with a layup from the right post to make the score 18-6 in favor of Utah State. The Broncos finished the half down 30-18. The Broncos shot a season-low 23.5 percent (8-34) from the floor in the first half and went 1-11 from the arc, scoring a low for points for the first half. The two teams combined for 27 turnovers in the first 20 minutes, however, points off turnovers were even at 11 each.

Behind 12, Boise State’s struggles continued into the second half as they opened with four turnovers in the first five minutes. Utah State responded with an 8-0 run to take a game-high 20-point lead at 38-18 with 17:32 left.

The deficit remained in double-figures for most of the final 20 minutes with one exception. The Broncos made several attempts to rally pulling to within eight points once at 46-38 with 8:41 to play, but were unable to get closer.

Boise State shot season-lows from the floor at 31.9 percent (23-72) and from behind the 3-point arc converting only 12.5 percent (3-24). The Broncos went to the line only 11 times making eight for 72.7 percent.  Utah State had its moments but shot the ball decent on the night hitting 43.9 percent (25-57) from the floor, 18.2 percent (2-11) from the 3-point line and 70.8 percent (17-24) from the foul line.

Kati Isham led Boise State with 18 points, 15 in the second half, to go with two rebounds and one assist. Lauren Lenhardt followed with 10 points, six boards, two assists and one block. Janie Bos scored six points while grabbing a team-high 10 rebounds.

Devyn Christensen led Utah State with 21 points, three boards and two blocks. Amber white added 14 points and five rebounds, followed by Banna Diop with a double-double on 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Boise State drops to 9-6 on the year and 0-1 in WAC play, while Utah State goes to 7-7 overall and 1-0 in league. The Broncos will now travel to Reno for a 5:30 p.m. (Mountain) tip at the University of Nevada Saturday evening.
