FRESNO, California (1/5/08) - Fresno State outlasted a Boise State rally to hand the Broncos a 73-63 loss in their conference opener on the road in Fresno, Calif. Boise State rallied from 21 points down early in the second half to take a five-point lead with 11:21 to play. Unfortunately, they ran out of gas down the stretch as the Bulldogs recovered with a rally of their own to claim the 10-point win over the Broncos.

The game was a story of two halves, one that nothing went right for the Broncos and the second where they could do no wrong before running out of energy. Boise State opened the first half with very little intensity and struggled as a result. They saw Fresno State seize control of the game early and slowly pull away claiming a 19-point advantage at the break.

The first half started with a Fresno State 9-4 run followed by Boise State’s Jenna Galassi and Jessica Thompson picking up their second personal fouls by the 12-minute mark. The Broncos struggles continued as they shot 28 percent (7-25) from the floor, 12.5 percent (1-8) from the 3-point line, and 62.5 percent (5-8) from the foul line in the first period. They also turned it over 12 times accounting for 11 Bulldog points. At the intermission the Broncos found themselves down 39-20.

Fresno State opened the second period with a Jaleesa Ross layup to give the Bulldogs a 21-point advantage 10 seconds into the half. However, the Broncos responded with a 28-4 run sparked by 17 Jessica Thompson points as Boise State stormed back to claim a five-point lead, 48-43, with 11:21 to play.

The lead was short lived with the Bulldogs reclaiming the advantage for good on a Bailey Amundsen layup with 8:16 remaining and the score at 51-50. The game stayed close throughout the final eight minutes but the Broncos failed to regain the lead.

The Fresno State lead fluctuated between four and six points down the stretch. Boise State had chances to get back into it but came up short. Fresno State slowly pulled away again eventually taking a 10-point victory over Boise State.

On the day, the Broncos hit 44.6 percent (25-56) from the court, 16.7 percent (3-18) from beyond the arc, and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the free-throw line. Boise State shot 58.1 percent (18-31) from the floor in the second half. The Bulldogs countered with 38.1 percent shooting in the game from the hardwood, 32 percent (8-25) from the 3-point line, and 85 percent (17-20) from the charity stripe.  Rebounding was even with 36 apiece, however, Fresno State out scored Boise State 14-4 in second chance points.

Jessica Thompson scored 24 of her 26 points in the second half to lead Boise State. Tasha Harris added 17 points followed by seven points and seven rebounds from Jackie Lee. Senior center Amanda Stewart grabbed a team high eight boards.

Fresno State had three players in double figure scoring led by Hayley Munro with 14 points and nine rebounds. Tierre Wilson also recorded 14points followed by Jaleesa Ross’ 13 and six rebounds.

The loss was the first for the Broncos in conference as they opened league play at Fresno State, they dropped to 8-5 overall. Fresno State moved to 2-0 in league play and 7-8 overall.  Up next for Boise State is a trip to New Mexico State on Thursday followed by Louisiana Tech on Saturday.
