Boise State opens WAC play with an 80-70 win over Utah State

LOGAN, Utah -- The Boise State women's basketball team opened Western Athletic Conference action with an 80-70 win at Utah State Thursday night.

Sophomore Jessica Thompson led four Broncos in double-figures with 24, while Nadia Begay chipped in 16.  Michelle Hessing and Jackie Thompson each scored 13 points, a career high for Thompson.  

Brittany Phillips led Utah State with 15 points. Jenny Gross, from Vallivue High School in Caldwell, recorded nine points and 10 rebounds.

Both teams shot the lights out in the game as it turned into an up tempo race. Boise State shot 29-56 (.518) from the floor, 7-13 (.538) from beyond the arc, and 15-16 (.938) from the free throw line. Utah State shot 28-59 (.475) from the hardwood, 5-13 (.385) from three-point range, and 9-14 (.643) from the charity stripe.

Boise State's win was their first in a leauge league opener in three years and improves the Broncos record to 10-4 overall and 1-0 in WAC play. Utah State drops to 4-9 overall and 0-1 in league. The Broncos will be back in action on national television next Monday against Nevada. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:04 p.m. And will be broadcast live by CSTV.
