Boise State Rolls Past Utah Valley 85-64

BOISE, Idaho - Boise State opened the game on a 14-0 run and never looked back as the Broncos defeated Utah Valley 85-64 in a nonconference women's basketball game in Boise.  Boise State never trailed as the Broncos hit their first eight shots of the game to take control early. They led by as many as 26 points late in the contest as the blue and orange improved to 8-6 on the year. Senior Kati Isham led the team with 20 points followed by Nicole Brady and Lauren Lenhardt with 15 and 13 respectively. It is the sixth time this season that the Broncos scored 80 or more points.

"I was really happy with our intensity in the game, we shot and moved the ball well," said head coach Gordy Presnell. "We needed a game like this to get us back on track. Everyone contributed today. I felt several players had good outings for us including Kati (Isham), Lauren (Lenhardt) and Nic (Nicole Brady)."   

The coaching staff changed the starting lineup against the Wolverines as freshman Keiahnna Engel and sophomore Cinnamon Lister earned their first starts of the season, while Nicole Brady returned to the starting rotation at the wing. Lister was solid at the point pushing the tempo as the Broncos raced up the floor on the attack. She finished with three points, one rebound, four assists and one steal. Engel added four points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals.  
 
The Broncos came out on fire as they hit their first eight shots storming out to a 14-0 lead, then extended it to 19-5. After struggling to get its shots to fall in the last two contests, Boise State found its touch shooting an impressive 62.5 percent in the first half as it ran out to a 24-point lead, 38-14, with 5:45 left in the period. The home side finished the half by taking a 21-point, 47-26, lead into the break. The 47 points tied for the most this season in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Brady and Lenhardt recorded the bulk of their points in the first half as they combined for 21 of the 47 points, 11 and 10 respectively. The Broncos were also hot from beyond the arc in the half hitting six-of-eight from 3-point range. Brady was three-of-three from the arc while Lenhardt went two-for-two.

Utah Valley struggled early getting its shots to fall hitting 31.4 percent in the first half in addition to turning it over nine times leading to a 13 to two advantage for the Broncos on points off turnovers. Sammie Jensen scored 11 of her team-high 19 points in the first half.

The second half went back and forth as the Broncos cooled off a bit shooting 35.5 percent from the floor in the final period. However, the Wolverines were unable to take advantage of it and could only get as close as 15 points, 56-41, with 11:19 to play. Boise State's largest lead of the game was 26 points and came with 1:28 remaining with the score at 83-57.

Boise State finished the game with its second-best field goal percentage of the year and best in five games hitting 49.2 percent (31-63) from the floor. The Broncos also recorded their second highest 3-point percentage of the year hitting nine-of-19 attempts for 47.4 percent. In a game that saw only one free throw in the first half for either team, a make by Boise State's Lister, the Broncos finished the game making 14-of-20 attempts (70 pct.).

Isham came in off the bench to lead the Broncos making six-of-14 shots including four-of-seven from the arc as she finished with 20 points, four rebounds and three assists. Brady just missed her third double-double of the year with 15 points and nine rebounds, followed by Lenhardt who added 13 points and eight rebounds, she went five-for-eight from the floor in the game. 

Every Boise State player scored in the contest including Julia Marshall who saw her first action since late November after recovering from an injury finishing the game with five points and two boards. Mandy Munns just missed double digit points with nine points to go with three rebounds and one assist.

Utah Valley finished at 36.1 percent (26-72) from the floor, 34.6 percent (9-26) from beyond the arc and 37.5 percent (3-8) from the free-throw line. Jensen finished with 19 points and team-high nine rebounds to lead UVU. Taylor Huber followed with 17 points.

Boise State out rebounded Utah Valley 46 to 39 even though the Wolverines had the edge in offensive boards by a 17 to 14 margin. However, the Broncos did have a small advantage in second chance points, 16 to 14. Boise State turnover the ball over more than the Wolverines 14 compared to 13, but the Broncos turned their takeaways into a 20 to 10 advantage in points off turnovers. They also dominated the paint out scoring UVU by a 32 to 16 margin in the post. 

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Broncos who will close the nonconference portion of their schedule next Saturday at New Mexico State University in Las Cruces, the second meeting of a home-and-home series this season. Utah Valley drops to 6-7 on the year with the loss.
