Boise State Wins Round One with Colorado State
Dec. 31, 2014
BOISE, Idaho (12-31-2014) - Deanna Weaver scored 17 points to lead Boise State over Colorado State 75-65 in the Mountain West opener at Taco Bell Arena. Boise State won round one between two of the top teams in the conference by utilizing its bench depth as the Broncos reserves outscored the Rams 40-to-15.
Boise State, who was picked second in the preseason poll behind the defending champion Rams, recovered from a slow start to take the key victory as it improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in MW play, while CSU goes to 8-4 and 0-1 in conference. The win extends two Broncos win streaks giving them their fourth straight victory overall and their ninth consecutive at Taco Bell Arena.
Weaver, a senior from Santa Clara, Calif., led a key stretch in the first half for the Broncos by hitting the first two of six 3-pointers made by Boise State in a five-minute stretch that gave momentum to the Blue and Orange. She scored nine of her team-high 17 points in the opening period. On the day she went 5-of-7 from beyond the arc and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line. Weaver added eight rebounds, two assists and team-high three steals in 33 minutes.
Yaiza Rodriguez Ortego was the only other Bronco to reach double digit points coming in off the bench to record 10 to go with one board and two assists. Everyone who played scored in the game for the Broncos. Shalen Shaw recorded eight points and eight rebounds in 15 minutes, while Keiahnna Engel matched Shaw's point total and added three rebounds and three assists in 16 minutes. Tonishia Childress and Kenna McDavis each contributed seven points to the Boise State offensive effort.
Camille Redmon led the Broncos on the glass recording 12 rebounds. She had more offensive boards, six, than the entire Colorado State team which had four. The senior also added four points and a team-high three blocks. Kinzi Poteet returned to active duty seeing her first action since the Yale game on Nov. 26. Poteet recorded five points and five rebounds against Colorado State in 14 minutes of action.
Boise State finished the day shooting 38.7 percent (24-of-62) from the floor, 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from beyond the arc and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) from the free-throw line. The Broncos dominated the glass out rebounding the Rams 44-to-30 and 15-to-4 in offensive boards which resulted in a 10-to-0 advantage in second chance points for the Blue and Orange.
Colorado State shot 46.4 percent (26-of-56) from the floor, 40.9 percent (9-of-22) from 3-point range and 57.1 percent (4-of-7) from the charity stripe. The Rams were led by Elin Gustavsson with 14 points and six rebounds, followed by Gritt Ryder with 12 points and Ellen Nystrom with 11.
The first half opened with both teams being a little timid. Boise State struggled early holding on to the ball committing five turnovers in the first six and half minutes. Fortunately, CSU failed to capitalize on them managing to only take a four-point lead at 11-7 after the fifth turnover came at 13:45. Tonishia Childress kept the Broncos in the game early scoring the first seven Boise State points.
Boise State regrouped and committed only six more turnovers in entire game, two in the final 13:45 of the first period. The Broncos battled back to take their first lead at 8:57 following six consecutive Engel points for a 18-16 advantage.
Weaver then hit back-to-back treys that sparked a 3-point barrage by the Broncos. With the score tied at 18, six of the Broncos next seven made field goals were from beyond the arc, the first two by Weaver. The hot shooting moved momentum in favor of the Broncos who took a six-point 39-33 lead into halftime.
The final 20 minutes was a defensive battle as the Mountain West's top two defenses asserted themselves. Boise State never trailed in the period and maintained a three to eight point advantage most of the way, with the exception of one CSU rally attempt.
Colorado State made a run midway through the half when the Rams pulled from seven down to tie the score at 56 on a pair of Emilie Hesseldal free throws with 7:54 left.
Boise State responded with a short jumper by Kinzi Poteet to put the Broncos up for good. It was a one-point game, 62-61, when Boise State put the game away with an 11-0 run to take a 73-61 advantage with 1:12 to play.
Next up for the Broncos is a road trip to Logan, Utah, to face Utah State at 2 p.m. in the Dee Glenn Smith Spectrum.
