BOISE, Idaho - Boise State lost 73-49 to Portland Sunday afternoon in a nonconference women's basketball in Taco Bell Arena at Boise. A slow start cost the Broncos against the Pilots as they fell behind early and never recovered. Freshman Miquelle Askew led the Broncos with 14 points as Boise State fell to 5-5 on the year.

Askew recorded a team-high for points for the third time this season as the freshman made a living from the free throw line going eight-of-11 from the stripe while scoring 14 points.

Brandi Henton just missed her first double-double scoring nine points and grabbing a career-best 10 boards to go with one assist, two blocks and one steal.  Diana Lee added eight points and team-high three assists from the point guard position.

On the day Boise State shot a season-low 23.1 percent from the floor, 18.5 percent from the arc and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line. Portland countered at 45.3 percent from the floor, 41.2 percent from the 3-point arc and 72.7 percent from the charity stripe.

Kari Luttinen led three Pilots in double figure points with 17, followed by Annika Holopainen with 15 and Cassandra Thompson with 10.

A slow start by the Broncos found the blue and orange in a hole early in the first half as Portland took a 10 point, 15-5, lead at the 12 minute mark.  Boise State struggled through a scoring drought that lasted just under seven minutes, while the Pilots took advantage of the opportunity by rolling off a 16-0 run to take a 23-5 lead, the first of two period-high 18 points leads, with 8:15 left in the opening 20 minutes.

Boise State was unable to get the deficit under 10 points the rest of the way as they trailed by 15 points, 34-19, at the half and a game-high 24 three times in the second period, the first came at 56-32 with 10:34 to play and the last at the final buzzer with the score 73-49.

Boise State will take sometime for finals this week before returning to the hardwood to close a four-game homestand next Saturday when the Broncos host the University of South Dakota at noon (12 p.m.) in Taco Bell Arena. Note the start for the game has been moved from the originally schedule start of 1 p.m. to noon.
