COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Freshman center Miquelle Askew led Boise State with a career-high 18 points, but it was not enough as the Broncos lost 77-70 to San Diego Friday night in a nonconfrence women's basketball game at the Air Force Classic in Colorado Springs, Colo. Boise State battled back from a 10-point deficit in the first half to take a 34-31 halftime lead. With the game tied at 52 midway through the second period USD ran off a 7-2 run to take the lead for good. Boise State goes to 3-3 on the year with a game tomorrow afternoon against UMKC to wrap-up the Air Force Classic.

Senior Lauren Lenhardt recorded 10 points Friday night to become the 16th Bronco all-time to surpass the 1,000 career-point milestone. She also tied for the team-high on the glass with eight rebounds. Askew kept Boise State in the contest during the first half scoring 14 of her team-high 18 points in the opening period. The freshman from South Jordan, Utah, went 10-10 from the free-throw line.

Amber Vandiver added nine points and matched Lenhardt's eight boards. Julia Marshall also had nine rebounds to go with four rebounds, while Rosalie Cutri and Brandi Henton added seven points each. Diana Lee recorded a team-best six assists in 30 minutes.

The Broncos finished the night shooting 32.4 percent (22-68) from the floor, 23.8 percent (5-21) from beyond the arc and 95.5 percent (21-22) from the free-throw line. Rebounding was even at 40 each but San Diego dominated the paint 48-26.

San Diego countered hitting 49.1 percent (27-55) from the court, 16.7 percent (1-6) from the 3-point arc and 73.3 percent (22-30) from the charity stripe. The Toreros had three players in double figure points led by Maya Hood with 19 points and six rebounds, Amy Kame added 18 points and eight boards, followed by Katelyn McDaniel with 16 points and six rebounds.

Boise State opened the game slow as UMKC took a 10-point lead five minutes into the contest at 12-2. The Broncos would eventually rally from three 10-point deficits with the last coming at 26-16 with 7:53 remaining in the opening period.

Down 10, Boise State came alive running off a 14-3 run to take its first lead of the game on a pair of Brandi Henton free throws with 2:10 on the clock. The Broncos ended the half with a 18-5 run in the final eight minutes to take a three-point 34-31 advantage into the break.

Freshman Miquelle Askew had a career-night in the opening 20 minutes scoring 14 of the Broncos 34 points, no one else had more than five. San Diego shot 44.4 percent from the floor while Boise State came in at 30.6 percent.

The second half was a battle from the start with the teams trading mini-runs. With the score tied at 52 with 10:14 on the clock San Diego took the lead for good at 54-52. The Toreros took a 10 point lead at 69-59 and again at 71-61 with 4:03 left. Boise State tried to come back pulling to within three, 73-70, with 1:33 remaining, but that was as close as the Broncos would get.
