Bronco Women Fall 75-61 at San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Boise State came up short on the road Saturday afternoon as the Broncos lost to the San Francisco Dons 75-61 in War Memorial Gym at San Francisco. Boise State opened slow falling behind 25-5 before rallying to within five points early in the second half. But the Broncos could get no closer as they fell to 3-2 on the year with the loss.
Lauren Lenhardt fought through early foul trouble in the first half to score 17 of her team-high 19 points in the final 20 minutes. She went eight-of-15 from the floor, two-of-four from beyond the arc and one-for-one from the free-throw line.
Laura Pelse followed Lenhardt with a career-high eight points on four-of-five shooting to go with three rebounds. Rosalie Cutri added seven points, three boards, two assists and two steals. Erica Martinez also had seven points to go with three rebounds, one assist and two steals, while Brandi Henton match with seven points and team-high eight rebounds.
Boise State finished the game shooting 38.7 percent (24-62) from the floor, 22.2 percent (4-18) from the 3-point arc and 64.3 percent (9-14) from the free-throw line. San Francisco countered at 44.8 percent (26-58), 35 percent (7-20) from 3-point range and 64 percent (16-25) from the charity stripe.
Mel Khlok was on fire from 3-point range against the Broncos making six-of-13 to finish with 26 points, three rebounds, five assists and three steals, Aundrea Gordon added 13 points followed by Zhane Dikes with 12.
Boise State opened the game slow against San Francisco making two of its first 13 shots and finding itself down 10-0 before the Broncos could blink. Brandi Henton got the Broncos on the board with a 3-pointer at the 16:15 mark and Lenhardt added a layup shortly after to make the score 13-5 with 14:29 to play.
However, the Dons responded with a 12-0 run to race out to a 20-point advantage at 25-5 with 10 minutes remaining in the half. Boise State refused to give up as the Broncos rallied. With Lenhardt and Vandiver on the bench in foul trouble, Martinez led a 15-2 run with seven points as the Broncos closed to within 27-20.
Laura Pelse entered the game with nine minutes left in the period and scored six points as Boise State pulled to within six points at 32-26 with 1:39 to go. The Dons eventually took a nine-point lead into halftime up 35-26.
Boise State closed to within five points early in the second period on two occasions, the first at 41-36 and the second came at 43-38 with 15 minutes to play. USF then went on a 15-4 run to take a 16-point, 58-42, advantage with just over nine minutes to go.
The closest Boise State would get after that was six points at 60-54 with 5:29 left on the clock.
