Boise State Holds Off Pesky Weber State

Lenhardt records second double-double of the year with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

OGDEN, Utah - Boise State battled through a rough game on the road Tuesday night to defeat the Weber State Wildcats 70-56 in Ogden, Utah. It is the third consecutive victory for the Broncos to open the season who overcame foul trouble and turnovers to notch the win. Lauren Lenhardt led Boise State fighting through double teams to record her second double-double of the season on 13 points and 10 rebounds.

Five Broncos reached double figure points against the Wildcats following Lenhardt were Brandi Henton and Diana Lee with 12 points each, while Amber Vandiver and Erica Martinez both tied their career-highs with 10 apiece. Henton also added eight rebounds to her point total, with Lee adding six boards, three assists and three steals.

The game was physical from start to finish with both teams pushing each other around which contributed to season low shooting percentages by Boise State. On the night the Broncos shot 34.9 percent (22-63) from the floor, 29.2 percent (7-24) from beyond the arc and 76 percent (19-25) from the free-throw line.

Boise State held Weber State to 29.2 percent from the court, 40 percent (4-10) from the 3-point arc and 60.9 percent (14-23) from the charity stripe. Regina Okoye led the Wildcats with 10 points and four rebounds, followed by Jalen Carpenter with nine points and 12 boards, Kalie Matthews chipped in nine points and 11 rebounds.

The first half was rough with a combined 22 fouls called to go with 26 turnovers, the Broncos started slow as a result.  With the game tied at nine apiece Boise State ran off a 14-2 run to take control with a 23-11 advantage. The lead would grow to 13 at 30-17 with 4:22 left in the period.

Boise State took a 12 point, 32-20, lead into the break led by Lenhardt with 11 points and six rebounds, followed by Brandi Henton with nine points and Miquelle Askew with six boards.

The second half was as bruising as the first 20 minutes but the Broncos managed to pull away taking a 25-point advantage at 57-32 with 10:46. Unfortunately, things became interesting as fouls mounted against Boise State and the Broncos began to struggle getting shots to fall.

Weber State began to rally slowly pulling back into the contest pulling to within nine points twice late, the first came with 1:41 left and Boise State up 63-54, the second was with 1:08 on the clock and the score reading 65-56.

The Broncos were forced to hold off the Wildcats from the free-throw line down the stretch as they went seven-for-eight from the stripe, Lee went four-of-four, Martinez two-of-two and Marshall one-for-two. Boise State finished the game on a 5-0 run to win by 14 points 70-56.

Boise State will be back in action at home on Nov. 20 when instate-rival Idaho State comes to town for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff in Taco Bell Arena.
